What if Minecraft Pi Edition was Updated?

Sun Dec 23, 2018 11:47 pm

I know that this edition will most probably never be updated.

As of right now, it's version 0.1.1 and was based on Alpha 0.6.1 of Pocket Edition.

Sadly, It hasn't been updated since 2013. :(

Code: Select all

“The original team has stopped
supporting it and starting with
0.9 MCPE became a lot more
ambitious technically, which
also means that it became a lot
harder to strip down to run on a
Raspberry Pi.
Actually, we finished removing
all Pi related code to reduce
complexity in 2015.

Maybe someday we'll revisit it
but I wouldn't hold my breath.
On the other hand, Win10 runs
on the Pi so you can run the
Win10 version there!
 ... I guess it's something.”

— Tommaso Checci on the
discontinuation of Pi Edition

But it's just interesting to wonder what they might do if they were to ever update it.

For example:

  • Would they update it closer to a newer Pocket Edition
  • Or maybe update it to work with the Better Together thing.. probably not actually..
  • It would be nice to see Survival mode added
  • As well as mobs that would actually spawn..

But then again, it's kinda good that it hasn't been updated,

as that means it uses less resources, meaning that any pi could run it well,

making it good for it's main purpose, which is to have more fun learning to code. :)
A curious folk.

If you are this interested in blue sky thinking then would suggest you create your own version or get a better hobby ?

Last time I installed raspbian Stretch from a new download, I didn't even see minecraft in the menu.
Not sure if it was just me, but it looks like they've stopped supplying it with new distros (probably happened when They removed all the 'unwanted' programs and such)

The "full" distro that contains the "unwanted" programs is available here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/

Minecraft Pi is supplied within the "Raspbian Stretch with desktop and recommended software" package.

yes, i think that they should add mobs and survival mode,

but all i really want is to be able to name (and rename) mcpi worlds. :D
(i spend about 1/2 hour every day just looking for the right world  :D  )

They would probably make it work full screen properly and try and integrate it into the Education Edition so it can be controlled from the various drag and drop methods like MakeCode.
https://education.minecraft.net

Now the Pi3 has a bit more power than the Pi1, it could cope with a bit more.
It would still need to be simplified to make it a bit nicer.
All it really needs is the rough edges sorted out as you say.

The python part of MCPi is https://github.com/martinohanlon/mcpi maybe have a read to see how it works.

Are you guys aware of the survival mode patch? I think that's the most straightforward way to enter survival mode, but there are also a few other ways such as modifying the world files or loading one from Pocket Edition 0.6.1.

In survival mode I typically see spawns of cows and sheep, but for zombies and creepers run Skeleton/Will-777's Python script.

There's a patch for that too, by the same author of the survival mode patch.

Try this:

Code: Select all

cd ~/minecraft/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds
mv world yourcustomworldname
That will make a different name appear in gray above the word 'Creative'. If you'd like to change the name in bold above it:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install hexedit
cd ~/minecraft/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds/yourcustomworldname
hexedit levels.dat
then find the level name at the top, edit, and save. You probably should make a backup first, although MCPI is kind enough to already have a level.dat_old for you in case you forget.

Heres how to make Minecraft Pi fullscreen:

1) Go into a world.
2) Once its loaded, be shure that the window is focused
3) Hit escape (will bring some kind of pause menu)
*If you do the following wrong, repeat step 3*
On your keyboard, hit ALT+fn+F11

If it doesnt work, im not suprised. My mac keyboard is a diva, I need to add the "fn" in the combination so that the raspberry pi understands that I wanted to hit F11.

I didnt tried this, but if you dont have a mac keyboard, try "ALT+F11".
I hope it helps some of yall. :) Found this trick by accident.

Confirmed pressing Esc for the game menu followed by Alt+F11 works on a regular old keyboard.

One caveat is that when the Mesa VC4 driver is enabled it cuts off 3/4 of the screen, but whatever, it works fine with the default driver.

Amazing. After all these other hacks ranging from boot-time resolution, LD_PRELOAD injection, and the binary patch it comes down to something much simpler. Nice find, WillBoxOwO.
