Is .io ethical?

Fri Oct 19, 2018 10:12 am

Is using the .io domain ethical? It is legal but is it right, even for a redirect?

This is a general question as the profits from the .io domain, which represents the British Indian Ocean Territory or the Chagos Islands, do not seem to be going to the Chagos people or their representatives, unlike .tv which supports the people of Tuvalu.

Information and interesting article here:
https://gigaom.com/2014/06/30/the-dark- ... land-deal/

 To avoid being redirected to fake sites I understand that organisations need to register and redirect common abbreviation named sites, e.g. rpf.io -> raspberrypi.org, but should we redirect via a page which acknowledges the issues, even if just initially?

:geek: Can't we be techie and ethical?

Any comments welcome.

A political/ethical post. I can't see why this is Pi related.
Scotty never said "I canae give her any more Captain, She'll blow".
B'Elanna Torres however did say "Get the cheese to the sickbay" :?:

Really, it's just some text after a dot.
People use all sorts, why should the money go to anyone but the people who have the hardware and are administering the few text characters.

Wow.

(Yes, as hard as it is to believe, I actually get what OP is saying...)

If a post offends you, just put that poster on your foes list, and be done with it (and with them).

To do otherwise, risks being banned.

But it is two different situations.
One is money wrangling buying and selling and by a government.
The other is a company just doing the job.
No difference bar one government wishes to make money out of it and managed to front the start while other companies make/have made a lot more out of it.
(Article is blocked here but Wikipedia has the jist)

Of course all profit should go back into supporting the people that run the domains to keep them going and making them available. I.e. Not-for-profit (like RPF) or profit-with-a-purpose (like RPT)

No government should make any money out of a chance it's the new fad name to have.
