berrymix,
These games made me forget about the outside world.
It's sad for me to hear you say that. Because the "outside world" has always been amazing to me.

First computer game I ever played was "STREK"; Star Trek on an ASR33 teletype.

It was rubbish. So thinking I could do better became a driving force for me, brought me to where I am now. Even when I did not succeed I learned a lot along the way.

That "I can do better than that" motivation has increasingly been lost as time has gone by. I believe a lot of people were driven by it in the heyday of "Home Computers". It is near impossible to imagine one could or would create a better game, search engine, social media platform, or OS these days.

Though maybe not lost entirely. I think it has more morphed into "I can create something better suited to what I want". And the Pi gives more people the opportunity to do that.

Cavin123,

Was it so exciting, did it make you so happy, as to warrant two exclamation marks and four smilies ?

So we had a 110 baud 20 mA Teletype and you were led to a cave...

<< You see a stick >>
>> Pick up stick
<< You see a bird cage >>
>> Pick up cage
<< You see a canary >>

So obviously the bird was supposed to go in the cage but it wouldn't, not until you typed ...

<< Drop stick >>
<< The bird is in the cage >>

Was that on a Leo, a PDP8 or an LSI11, I've long since forgotten.

That was adventure. I never discovered what the mainframe was, nor where

Likely adventure as Burngate says. I recall the stick was actually the rod with a rusty star on its end. Dropping it stunned the bird and caused it to hop into the cage.

That was a long time ago. DECsystem-10 for me.

Probably find it was available on all sorts of machines in all sorts of places, probably with minor variations between.
Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossal_Cave_Adventure says it was developed in '76 for DEC PDP-11

EDIT: Found a couple of pages of interest: https://jerz.setonhill.edu/intfic/colos ... urce-code/
and http://www.digitalhumanities.org/dhq/vo ... 00009.html

My first computer game must have been one called "chopper" where you controled a helicopter and had to manuever through caves and rescue people from the top of buildings. All graphics were done with text characters. As far as I remember this was on an Olivetti machine, like 200 years ago. I don't remember the model though.

The first game I remember playing was a lunar lander game I wrote for part of my computer studies exam, it was on a Research Machines computer in BASIC between 1980 and 1982.

The first proper game was probably something I'd typed into a Sinclair ZX81 in 1983, and the first game I can actually remember the name of was Jet Set Willy on the Spectrum.

Maybe stretching the definitions of "computer" and "game" but I had a lunar landing game on my HP25 (not HP25C) pocket calculator. Don't remember the exact date but probably 1975 or 1976. Definitely before September 1976. I do remember the calculator cost me £119 which was a bit more than a week's salary at the time.

The HP25 did not have CMOS memory. When you switched it off the program you had typed in was lost. The HP25C had static CMOS memory which was kept powered up even when the calculator was switched off.

Grew up with the first version of The Sims, and I still play it sometimes with my younger sister, even though she prefers the newer versions :D

My memories are vague, but I think my first ever computer game was on DOS, called Dangerous Dave.

I also want to share my first game experience. It was "Corvette", and I really enjoyed this game! Did you play it?

"Skiing" game - typed in line by line from a paper magazine to a 1K ZX81 machine.

You had to "steer" the blob left and right through a series of blobs marking a ski course by pressing left and right buttons.

Quickly followed by "let's see how I can change the code to make it more fun".

There was no way to save it.

They're pretty clear in my case. It was SFII. My dad and I were passing through a local arcade when I was like 6 and I just took a peak. That was enough to convince me to get in there. I've been a fighting game enthusiast ever since. still play them on my android. :p
