List of websites hosted on a Pi?

Mon Mar 05, 2018 2:16 am

Hello there!
Ive been wondering for a long time... How many websites hosted on a Raspberry Pi are currently online at this moment? Im really curious. I would like to make a list of them in this thread, just drop the URLs here and let us see your projects! ;3

Ps: Do anyone know a livestream website from a Pi with camera module?

Websites:
http://venezsurmon.sitedemerde.org:81/ (my website, not online much!)

I don't thing that's a question anyone can answer. Instructions for setting up Pi as a web server are all over the place, so anyone with a Pi--or anyone who wants to get a Pi--can set up a web server. No one has collected any data on that, so far as I am aware. About all one can say is that the number of Pis running webservers is going to be less than the number of Pis that have been sold.

I think some live stream servers on Pis have been mentioned from time to time over the years in the blog. You might start searching there.

And what is meant by "website"? Accessible from the internet or only from the LAN which the RPi is on?

"website", as in World Wide Web.

That is to say, if it's not visible on the global internet then it is not a website.

Personally I would also add that a website should have a domain name.

For me, a webserver on a local device is not a website. Others will no doubt disagree.

To answer the question, I suspect if one used a suitable IP scanning tool that used server fingerprinting and such one could find all the publicly facing servers running on Raspbian in the world in no time.

Well, I checked my site using various analysers, and the most information I could get was from https://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report and all it gave for identification was:

OS : Linux
Web server: lighttpd/1.4.45

I didn't see any that detected that it was a Pi.

That netcraft thing is not very useful then.

I already got to know my web server and OS for a bunch of my servers just using netcat.

An online website. Like raspberrypi.org, not a local server. :)

Netcat can tell you that an internet site is on a pi?

piglet,
Netcat can tell you that an internet site is on a pi?
Perhaps not exactly but it can be a start. I just used netcat to make a request to some servers and they told be what server was running and the OS it was running on. There are other things you can do:
http://www.solutionsatexperts.com/http- ... ng-netcat/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_cont ... 7ge24gLv0c

You can get more information with nmap:
https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-determin ... emote-host

I guess it all depends on which webserver and other services a Pi is running and exposing to the internet. And how well they are configured.

Then one can start looking at things like the timing of responses and other such "side channel" information.

I'm betting that with enough slewthing one could be sure one is talking to a Pi sometimes.

Ahh - ok - so there's not currently a method to identify hardware but you think it might be possible by packet timing and inspection and that sort of thing. I know you can gain a lot from packet timing on a local network but would doubt that would be possible across the net. Packet content helps you know the server software technology but not what hardware it's running on.

So what happens if you run this, pointing at a Pi: (this result is for raspberrypi.org):

Code: Select all

$ sudo nmap -sV 93.93.128.230

Starting Nmap 6.47 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2018-03-06 11:24 UTC
Nmap scan report for 93.93.128.230
Host is up (0.10s latency).
Not shown: 992 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE VERSION
22/tcp open ssh OpenSSH 6.0p1 Debian 4+deb7u6 (protocol 2.0)
25/tcp filtered smtp
80/tcp open http
81/tcp open http Apache httpd 2.2.22 ((Debian))
443/tcp open ssl/http Apache httpd 2.4.10 ((Debian))
465/tcp filtered smtps
587/tcp filtered submission
6969/tcp open http-proxy Pound http proxy
Service Info: OS: Linux; Device: proxy server; CPE: cpe:/o:linux:linux_kernel
Sorry, I don't have a PI to hand to test with.

Perhaps one gets enough info, service versions etc, to determine the OS is raspbian. Hence the hardware is a Pi!

I PM'd you the address for my pi - would be interested to know what can be observed (please remove address info!).

Of course, with the x86 build of Raspbian, even if you could work out the O/S it may not be a pi.

Here we go (names changed to protect the innocent):

Code: Select all

$ sudo nmap -O pi.somewhere.com

Starting Nmap 6.47 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2018-03-06 11:59 UTC
Nmap scan report for pi.somewhere.com(99.99.99.99)
Host is up (0.11s latency).
rDNS record for 99.99.99.99: an-isp.com
Not shown: 998 filtered ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
80/tcp open http
8080/tcp open http-proxy
Warning: OSScan results may be unreliable because we could not find at least 1 open and 1 closed port
Device type: general purpose
Running: Linux 3.X
OS CPE: cpe:/o:linux:linux_kernel:3
OS details: Linux 3.11 - 3.14

Code: Select all

$ sudo nmap -sV pi.somewhere.com

Starting Nmap 6.47 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2018-03-06 11:58 UTC
Nmap scan report for pi.somewhere.com(99.99.99.99)
Host is up (0.11s latency).
rDNS record for 99.99.99.99: an-isp.com
Not shown: 998 filtered ports
PORT STATE SERVICE VERSION
80/tcp open http lighttpd
8080/tcp open http lighttpd

Service detection performed. Please report any incorrect results at http://nmap.org/submit/ .
Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 16.75 seconds
Not giving away much there!

An x86 might be doing things a lot faster than a Pi. That might be a giveaway.

That's good - so port 80 open, and 8080 forwarded (to 80) because I changed my mind which port I was going to use after I let people know the address!

That pi is
  • monitoring and controlling access for a number of game servers
  • providing stats and other monitoring and information services for them
  • providing human admins a one-stop shop for player management and
  • hosting a code repository for custom stuff running on the servers
Not bad for a $35 machine the size of a credit card.

Pretty good going. Not as boring as the page there says it is!

So what about getting some HTTPS going and shutting down 80 and 8080 ?

Yeah - I should do that sometime. I'm not sure that I know how to do it though. Yet.

That's the fun of the Raspberry Pi - finding something you want to do and working out how to do it.

Hi all.

Here´s my Raspberry Pi website (English version page right out of the box):

http://megacros.ddns.net/english-version/

Hope you like it.

I would love to find that website list too. Anyway, we could create a new one and share it to make it grow.

: )

Regards from Spain.
