I dislike the phrase snowflakes intensly, unless used to describe frozen water , so I suggest it isn't used.

Just because it's in the dictionary, doesn't mean it's not offensive. i simpy don't like its use in that context.

I'm no "snowflake", but object to misuse of some words. People will always do it: in the 70's & 80's calling someone a "Joey" if they made a mistake, in the "naughties" where anything people didn't like was "gay", and emails I still receive to this day exhorting me to "please revert to myself".

Anyway, on topic... I use the quick links "New posts" and "Your posts". Hopefully there's something I can learn or help with.

That's a product of outsourcing everything to India. The whole phrase is "Please do the needful and revert to myself", which in my dialect of English means "Please do what's needed. If you have any problems refer them to me".

The word insane is used in many areas outside it's original meaning, its now very common parlance. http://www.yourdictionary.com/insane primary definition may surprise in that it is not referring to one with a mental illness.

But that's just like using snowflake, which to me up here was always a gentle term used to call children, bless you little snowflake...
It's a shame words keep taking on any meanings. Gay being a well used word that you now cannot use for its original meaning.
Rainbows are going that way too.

Let's just leave snowflake to mean frozen ice, rainbow to be the magical splitting of light and gay to be nice and jolly?


I think insane is different, (and in a way is used like gay has had it meaning twisted), its meaning then caught on to describe mental health people because of the way they may behave. And insane stunts, insane meaning extravagant, wild, outrageous sort of thing.
And now the slang becomes the 'allowed' meaning of the word.


Though i don't mind being corrected on that.

This all begs the question of whether or not words really do have their meaning changed, just because either:
a) Some illiterate millennials start using it a certain way.
or even
b) The OED (or any other supposed "authority") bows to pressure and defines it that way.

I say no - and I point to the word "decimate" as my prime example.
To me, it still means what it really means.

I'm a number one stickler for precise and traditional language. But having studied the philosophy of language a bit, I've come to realize that it's only a convention, like driving on the right-hand side. There are no absolute answers. As long as most people in the community comprehend it the same way, it's language.
