Raspberry Pi for the post apocalypse survivalist.

Tue Sep 26, 2017 12:20 pm

How do us nerds continue in the face of disaster and failure of the infrastructure? With no power, no internet, no access to software etc

How would you run your own local compute systems? How would you communicate? Where do you get entertainment and information from?

Bryan Lunduke explores this challenge on his Youtube channel: "Being nerdy during the apocalypse", https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA_3_giMGPY

Which apparently will involve a lot of use of the Raspberry Pi.

If I didn't have any food I would have an extreme lack of interest in RPis or any other computers.
The most important leg of a three legged stool is the one that's missing.
It's called thinking. Why don't you try it sometime?

Wow, that guy just drones on and on and never really seems to get to the point. I tried to watch that video, even skipping ahead, but it's just monotonous over explaining everything without much content. I gave up about 3/4th of the way through the video.

Oh come on, you'll need something for entertainment while you starve to death.

Clearly you are not nerdy enough :)

Wow! You've got some stamina. I got about 42 seconds in before I'd had enough.

Maybe this guy needs to dropped off right not in Puerto Rico and start dealing with the essentials of survival like water, shelter, food, and sanitation. After that he start to worry about electric power and setting up some sort of voice communication network. After that if needed then computer networking, But I expect he might not last more than 3 days since he cannot figure out how to stay hydrated.

One needs to set realistic priorities and have the discipline to stay focused on the immediate goals to stay alive and healthy.

I was just reading that the Red Cross in Puerto Rico is asking for dozens of Ham Radio people to go over there and get some kind of communication going.

That is a real emergency that puts Bryan Lunduke's ideas here into perspective.

On the other hand there is a serious point at the bottom of all this. If, for whatever reason, the internet went out one day it would not be long before there are serious difficulties for all of us.

Absent modern medicine, I wouldn't last long enough to worry about the lack of computers and data communications.

Hey now, if you've got a bag of RPI Zeroes, you've got a bag of chips. Eat up, they even come in different flavors.

Ham Radio people for Puerto Rico is so that the Red Cross &c. can organise their response, to send the right help to the right places, not so that the natives can talk to each other.

If the internet (and other communications) went down around Britain, for example, most of us would survive quite happily until we ran out of cash to buy food.
The cash machines would have stopped working because they couldn't verify a card, and Tesco couldn't take card payment, either.
So there'd be plenty of food but we'd still starve.

Add to that the difficulty of working out which store is needing what product - Egham Tesco has far too much breakfast cereal but no Chianti, while Warfield can't get restocked with Ginster's slices - and the problem begins to become a disaster.

And things are only going to get worse.
With smart meters going on the blink, how will we know the best time to set the dishwasher going?

Power, internet communications, entertainment? I have the answers right here:

  • Power - solar on my rocking boat, kept at just the right angle with Pi powered servos.
  • Internet - not needed, have stored entire internet on my Pi powered SSD.
  • Communications - Why?
  • Entertainment - watching all you sillies from my safe, secure, Pi powered boat, positioned beyond swimming distance.

Nextthing's C.H.I.P. might be more appropriate in this context.

Sadly (unique in the market combination of onboard LiPo battery support and SSD), they went directly from limited production to Unobtainium.

That's one reason I keep an offline copy of wikipedia around (via rachel-pi 64GB sd https://racheloffline.org , but many other ways of doing it)
- try not to "just google it" when you can keep it local.
Android app - Raspi Card Imager - download and image SD cards - No PC required !
