Well I started off like many others with the 2nd Commodore 64, with a tape deck, amber mono screen, got the external disk drive later on, and two joysticks which always ended up breaking due to heavy use, especially playing Commando and ACE. You can already guess where my main love in computers lie?

This was followed by my 8088, with a RED turbo button which brought the speed up to I think 8MHz. I still have the original floppys for MSDos that came with it as well, if I remember it was the first version. Had two single sided 5 1/4 floppies and later added a massive 5MB MFM harddrive.

This was followed by the usual, 386-sx16 with 2MB ram, 486DX366,DX4-100, played with the Cyrix ones, never went AMD (bad reputation back then), then on to P2s and so on.

I always wanted an Amiga 500, never got one though

Just this Christmas, 3 days ago, my parents presented me with a present that turned out to be my old Beeb (re-gifting). With great excitement, I turned it on : it beeped and then popped as dense white smoke poured out.

I consigned it to the bin. I am sure that someone will say that was sacrilege. Sorry.

If it was smoke from the Power supply then it will cost about £3 to fix as it is probably the X2 Cap gone.

Simple fix and to be honest you could get £20+ on ebay for a non working beeb if you describe the fault!

I would buy it from you but i already have difficulty storing the 25+ Beebs I have!

3 IBM 370/145's

Oh, and a PDP11

Well, I say they were mine, I was responsible for them so it felt like they were.

ZX80
ZX81
Spectrum 48
Spectrum+
C64 + 1541 floppy [essential for playing Infocom adventures ]
Amiga 500 [on credit, had to go into HSBC every week and pay in £21]
Various custom PCs [memorable moments - overclocking a Celeron 300A to 450Mhz; unlocking AMD CPUs with a pencil; getting one of the first Canopus Pure3d cards (6MB!) direct from the US; paying £600 for a Yamaha single speed CD writer & SCSI interface.]

First mainframe experience: Sheffield Poly in 1983, learning FORTRAN. Shoulder surfed a second year and nabbed his password ('alpine' - my first ever hack). Used his account for nefarious stuff. If this was you, I apologise.

For me the first PC I touched was a Commodore PET 2001 with the chicklet keyboard and the built in cassette drive. I was 6.

First computer in the house was my Timex Sinclair 1000 and the family Apple //e. I got the TS myself so my dad would stop yelling at me spending all the time on the family computer. Used that until 87 when we started getting PCs, and I've been bouncing from PC to Mac as my economics allowed. Right now I've got 2 PCs, a HP notebook and a Macbook. The R-Pi will be a welcome addition to my little family

Electronica CIP-02

http://www.old-computers.com/m.....#038;c=700

Speccy clone with 64Kb ram and only 4Kb ROM containing a "MINI-BASIC" that was useful only for running basic tests (BORDER n - to check the colours, BEEP - to check the speaker) and load the Sinclair BASIC image from the tape in the 1st 16Kb of ram (which were then marked as read-only untill the next power-off)

This allowed for tweaking the ROM image very easily - i added a NMI switch which called up a menu (stored in the free ~1Kb between the BASIC code and font bitmaps in the "ROM") which allowed me to take a screenshot (to tape), save the memory image & CPU registers to tape in a format that allowed you to load-it and resume from where you saved-it (copy protection ? enter the code once then save at the main game menu), edit memory addresses or load a MASM in place of the Sinclair Basic.

The first computer we had at home was my brother's ZX81, then a C64 (on which I spent hours playing Elite, Thargoids go to hell) along with a Philips Videopac game console. My first very own computer was an Amiga 500 followed by an A1200 which were the best computers ever! I also bought a PC Engine game cosole with which I still play. In 1999 I had to reluctantly move to windows-based PCs until I moved to Linux. I owned two Mac Minis, the last of which died for no apparent reason and which was my last Mac for the foreseeable future.

And I look forward to the Raspberry Pi with a great deal of anticipation

At work at IBM in 1963 - an IBM 1401 with 4k core memory.

First owned (about 1974) an 8008 bus-based computer from a company named ProLog or maybe ProLogic in Santa Cruz, Calif. Program resided in EPROM, burned on a device using a hex keyboard. The EPROM was erased by a UV eraser.

Open the Byte Shop computer store in Berkeley in 1976. Sold a couple of Apple I boards. Our early mainstay was the IMSAI S-100 bus computer.

My computer history is as follows:

Amstrad CPC 464 - loved the tape drive

Acorn A3100 - Green function keys

Risc PC with that Texas Instruments Co-Processor card (had Windows 95 running in a window)

After that it gets a bit boring - Various PCs self built and upgraded along the way

486DX2 / AMD / Intel Pentiums / Laptops / Servers

Digital Group Nova in 1977

The RPi kicks butt!!!… my first computer cost more than a VW bug ...  had 16 Kilobytes of ram and a 1MHZ Z80 ... we built it as a club.  Me and 10 yr old son are thinking about making party's like this where the kids walk away with there own RPi.

ZX Speccy +2.  Was made fun of because everyone else had master systems and mega drives at the time.

Amstrad PC with 386sx came years later.  Has been Triggers Brush ever since...  its (empty) case still sits under my second monitor to my right.

ZX81 in 1982! Followed by the ubiquitous BBC 'B', then various (Spectrum 48K, Amiga 500, Oric Atmos) followed by various Acorns (A3020, A7000 & RiscPC, all used in my classroom for many years). I now use a MacBook Pro (2008) and PC's at school.

The first I programmed was an ABC-80, a Z 80 BASIC box built by now-defunct TV maker Luxor. This was 1979, and at a computer club in my city.

I started saving my allowance every week, and in 1981 (I think?) I bought a VIC-20, which I loved to death!
