It showed that way for me for a while, now I only see it in Off-Topic (had to go looking for it so I could keep complaining and trying to sidetrack everything).

Looking at the time of posting, there was only one response and that is just asking for a bit more information about the 'encoders'.

Nope cannot see any problem with that. Maybe it was the clueless questioning by the original poster, but i cannot see anything wrong with that.
Of course it may be that the original poster is looking at the lights from a spaceship travelling at 0.5c.

I dont see it. Whats wrong with that thread? IMO the poster who replied offered helpful advice.
Why did some responders here assume I was implying there was anything bad about the replies? It was the politeness of the first reply despite the low standard of the opening question. Note that it was not until the OP's 3rd post that the crucial piece of information appeared.

As to my own response, I took the trouble to shutdown down a running Pi3, remove the SD card, get a voltage and current measuring box from the cupboard, connect it to a USB port and power up to confirm that a RPi3 does not provide power to the USB ports if a SD card is not present. Only after that did I post.

I think there are significant differences between:
"Go away and do X first"
"It wont work without doing X"
"Y wont happen unless X is in place because...."

The first is snarky, the second terse, the third is educational.

It was probably because on topic is "Snarky non-responses to questions"

And sexist - women aren't allowed to be grumpy, old, or snarky? My wife owned the word snarky and wore it with pride.

Grumpy people, there is just no way to satisfy them.

I am looking forwards to my senior's card in a few years so I can really own it.
Is there a discount for seniors on Pi pricing?

Yep, but you have to go to Pi Towers itself, and for like the first hour or two they'll keep insisting that there's no such thing and that they're going to call security. But if you keep at it, they'll finally let you know about the secret senior discount. In fact, they seemed almost happy when I left. Must be that they were really happy somebody finally cracked the code and got a Pi Zero for $3.75. Totally worth the flight to England.

$3.75 wow some discount. I think someone must have chipped in to get rid of you
Fly to UK, fly back again, could do that a few times, 5 times, 10, 15 times in the time it takes to ship one down under?
Getting old here don't have much time left to play with Pi's, maybe only a decade or three.

That one at a time thing is slowing down my World takeover plans.
Better not get snarky at "them" or this will get shut down.

Er what was this post about again, forgot my pill.

Nah, 'tis the "Yellow Pill" of course (for reality checking**)
Trev.
** or not, IIRC an "Out of this world" short S.F. story c.1968 (subsequently televised, possibly early BBC2). Don't recall the author.
Still running Raspbian Jessie on some older Pi's (an A, B1, B2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W) but Stretch on my 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, A+ and a B2. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

Got anything more specific on that story? ISFDB doesn't find anything under "yellow pill" or "out of this world". Am I going to be reduced to a YASID post to rec.arts.sf.written?

(Again IIRC) the "Out of this World" series was a number of anthologies of S.F. short stories (whether they were British or U.S. publications I don't recall). The T.V. series of the same featured a number of episodes based upon some of them. 1968 is roughly the right time (post Dr. Who but pre-moon landings and my 'A' levels). I don't recall the books being in "paperback" but hardback (library) copies. (Most of my paperbacks from that period are Asimov, Clarke, Wells, Wyndham et al)
Trev.
Edit: I've now found a wikipedia entry (for the TV series) and I didn't RC!**:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out_of_Th ... _series%29
** However, reading through the above, "The Yellow Pill" was remade for the third season of "Out of the Unknown" which is probably the T.V. version I recalled (so I was almost right ;) )

As opposed to my daughter, who we described from a very young age as having a "won't of iron".
