Links in signature.

Some time ago I've been warned by a moderator to remove a couple of links that I had in my signature.
Incidentally, nothing "commercial" or not appropriated, IMHO (some repo on GitHub, a RPi dashboard, etc).
Anyway, I complied.

A problem is that I see links in signatures everywhere: so, are they forbidden or not?

I would like to see rules applied for everyone, that's all.

If I wasn't on the 255 character limit and I needed to include a link in my sig there would be a link in my sig. They're disallowed as active links (in [url][/url] tags). But since I have to make a positive effort to use a link in your signature I can't see any problems with that.

They're crawled by all of those web robots so you may get some unwanted traffic, but that's your problem.

One of the moderators has:

"Various male/female 40- and 26-way GPIO header for sale here ( IDEAL FOR YOUR PiZero ):
https:/ ... 82#p971555"

in his sig so either:

1. that is allowed and you can do the same
2. he is breaking the rules and you should not do the same
3. there is one rule for moderators and another rule for ordinary posters.

TBH I've never known there were any rules concerning links. This is the first I've heard, and I've always used them to promote my pi-related products, or stuff for sale. Obviously if the moderation team agree it's not allowed, then I'll follow the rules.
FWIW my links always point to a thread on this forum, never external links........

I used to have a clickable link in my signature. It pointed to early photos of Pi1 on my blog.

The only reason it was clickable was that it was there before the date when active links in signatures were disabled. A while after it became rather out of date I altered it.

I'm not familiar with any written policy on links in signatures, but if they are obviously spammy, excessive or promoting something the forum would not like to be associated with, I think there's a case for intervention. :D
(Mind you, I don't set the rules.)

Ok guys.
Thanks for your replies.
From what I understand, should be possible to add links in signatures (moreover, I'm not seeling anything).
Since there are no clear rules against this practice, as a result I'm putting back again some links down there.
I'll let you judge how much inappropriate they are. :)

well at least they are not clickable links (even if they look like they are). Lets see what other moderators think of this.
do they agree with this, or not, or perhaps they only agree with non clickable, non "blue" links to other places in this forum.
I still think these things attract (even more) spammers, we have to fight, especially if more people choose do do this, its also a pain, because we have to check these links.  :|
