Other Boards that Run Raspbian

Fri Nov 04, 2016 5:59 pm

My main interest is running Sonic Pi.
So far the Raspberry Pi does the best job.
(On Windows it degrades over time)
(The installation on Linux appears beyond me)
However there is one problem on the Pi.
When Sonic Pi starts it is VERY noisy.
(As if you can hear the workings of the system)
The Pi plays other music (radio, Mp3, YouTube)
fine, so ????????
Anyways I'd like to try different hardware.
Are there any other boards that will run Raspbian
(Sonic Pi) ? .... TIA .... Michael Miller

You're asking on here what Pi-clone you should get in preference over the Pi ?

Really ?

Wonder how soon until this gets locked ... ;)

You can use external hardware:

I've thought of that but am afraid that
(might not?) help ..... and would be
wasted money. The normal audio
(mp3 et al) is (for me) fine .... Just the
Sonic Pi (could be in the software ?)

you do understand that Raspbian was written specifically for the Raspberry PI don't you?

its name is a combination of "raspberry" and "debian".

I won't vouch for Sonic Pi, but I have a couple of Cubieboards (a model 1 and a model 2) that run Raspbian Wheezy okay. One thing to note...there are NO Raspberry Pi clones. None. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Hardkernel built a limited number of Pi1 clones (Odroid-W), but they weren't going to buy enough BCM2835 SoCs to interest Boardcom in selling them, so that product was withdrawn from the market. No one else that I've ever heard of has even tried to make an actual clone of any model of Pi. If you see any articles touting this or that board as a "Raspberry Pi clone", the source is lying. If they say "Raspberry Pi work-alike", they may be telling a limited truth.

I assume you are hearing the Power Supply and not the Pi board.I would start by borrowing a PSU and see if that fixs the issue. Note it needs to be a 2Amp PSU. A cheap phone charger may boot your PI, but will not be meaty enough and you will get strange things happening. Alternatives to the Pi, Google it. If you have heard of the Raspberry and have not heard or banana or beagle, there is a reason... They were better/faster (and more expensive) than early Pi. The version 3 is also faster - but at the same cheap price so they have largely lost any reason to exist. When you sell 10 million units or what ever the number is now you can manufacure cheaper, 3rd parties want to make compatable cases, cameras etc.

Linux install, if you stick to an Ubuntu or debian based setup then you just install from apt as per the website
http://sonic-pi.net
Two lines.

Given that is easy enough under Raspian, I would assume it's just as easy under Ubuntu.

Perhaps have a chat with the makers on Twitter/Google+/Facebook/Git to see if they have come across your problem.

Even really cheap USB audio might show a reduction in background noise. I have a couple of horrid $3 USB audio cards, and they sound pretty good. Worth a try.

Yes
Thank You Guys for the help :)
Would you try the following ? :

1) boot up Raspbian

2) listen to something (mp3 or ?) at a decent level

3) goto ........ >menu .....>programming .....>sonic pi

4) listen

Have you attempted overclocking the RAM a bit?

Also which RPi are you using? The Raspberry Pi 3B is going to give the best results.

I have 3 B .
The B + would not play much at all without choking .
Same noise .

I can not say for sure that it will help, thogh I would think that giving the RAM a small bump would help.

Also attempt to increase the priority of the task for sonic pi.
