Raspian in a VM on Windows PC?

Sun Aug 21, 2016 4:46 am

Has anyone tried to get a version of Raspbian to run a VM on a Windows PC (either using VirtualBox or VMWare or some other free VM software)?

I do Linux programming on the Pi using Raspbian, but I travel a lot so it would be nice to either run a Debian-based distro in a VM on my laptop or better yet, get Raspbian to work on my laptop for this purpose. But I know my laptop is not arm compatible so that may pose a problem. Is there also a VM system that can virtualize an ARM-based OS on an x86 or amd64 based system/architecture?

Investigate QEMU, this is one of many Blogs:

Do you need binary (ARM) compatibility, or just Debian ?

Easier and better performance just using a debain based distro from a ready made VM image:

Given the tinsie size of the Pi I don't see why you can't take it on your travels and continue programming on it directly.

Currently running Rasbian 2018-112632 inside VMWare on my PC. Check out https://www.osboxes.org/ for their large list of premade VirtualBox and VMWare images.

Just starting with Raspberry Pi but looks solid so far - still trying to find how to set screen size to larger values. (Not the "double pixel" from Pi3, but a true 1024x768, etc.) Going to Debian site to look for what might be hidden in the distribution.

That is not Raspbian, Raspbian only runs on ARM CPU Architecture.

VMWare and VirtualBox emulate x86 CPU Architecture.

This post is a necro. If anybody is interested, you can now just use the raspberry pi desktop (x86) operating system. No need for VM.

Necro yes, but still does not alter the fact that as per the TITLE one can not run Raspbian in a x86 VM.

Raspbian ARMHF and Debian x86 are not the same Operating Systems.

The only commonality is they both use a fork of LXDE as the desktop environment.
