I fear just too late to give one as a Christmas present to my little brother.

14th I think was last day for UK parcel post, I fear it'll be after christmas now.
Will all be too busy around then anyway!

Ok so now we know the first 100 will be up for auction in Dec and the rest most likely later. Does that mean that the Pool is for the first 100 or the big batch that most of us can afford to buy from? Even though this is just a hypothetical contest with no prize.

Well, on one hand they are shipping the first Pis by auction, but on the other hand does this count as the "release"?

Toss a coin?

My bet was definitely for a big batch release, not just the auction ;)

This topic was created before we knew anything about the auction.
So, our bets are to the batch release.

Yes. This thread was for the full release of the complete batch. It does mean that most of us are way off :)

I still stand by 18th December, but it turns out that must be for the auction going live. I think you'll see the first truly wild ones scampering off to dig burrows in the snow 22nd January, 11:23 GMT.
We should ask for a webcam to be set up outside RaspberryPi Towers for the event.

Not before January 21. Murphy told me.
It's still gonna come out ahead though, the other "it's ready when it's ready" project I know of is in that state for at least five years now, and frankly I stopped expecting to see it done in my lifetime. Compared to that, this is nothing...

Nah - it's got to be before Jan 10th, because Liz said she was going to CES (Jan 10th - 13th), then off skiing.

..oh - so maybe it'll be Jan 21st :-(

This turned up in the Twitter stream on the front page. I've no clue as to its context, but here goes.

"We've always said last quarter of the year; I don't know where that turned into early Dec! Should have something before year end. "

As I see it, the reasons for wishing "early December" are something like this:

In terms of last quarter, December is "end of".
People are getting very excited about the Pi.
People would like to give themselves a nice Christmas present.
Christmas (and the New Year) get in the way of commercial transactions at the end of the month.
Postal/other delivery processes are very busy during December!

So, given the above factors, its perfectly natural to hope that the Pi would be available earlier rather than later in the month. Its also got to be remembered that in every other quarter, there isn't an end of quarter imperative to desire the product - there isn't such a hard deadline as Christmas imposes, so long as it happens before the end of the month in other quarters, then everything is ok.

And people are inclined to overlook barriers in persuit of the object of desire.

:-)

Anyhow, despite all the above, I'm with the wishful crowd and I'll stick to the 19th and the time I suggested, though the more realistic half of my brain would argue for the the early hours of Friday 30th December...

The context was that someone was being fussy because they were expecting an early December release date ;) Liz isn't banging a person for *wishing* for an early December release, she's saying she's not sure were people got the idea to *expect* an early release and be grumpy when those expectations weren't met :)

Okay, my can't-lose first guess was gonna be "when it's announced" but someone else is getting all the trout for that one, so my second-best guess is 22 December 12:00 PM. - first day of Winter!

I picture a stack of 10,000 boxes next to 10 printers zapping out labels at light speed, which the (currently-unemployed) Oompa-Loompas affix to said boxes so that the (no doubt, prearranged) waiting fleet of Royal Mail lorries can wisk the now-labeled boxes off on their world-wide journey (preferably one of which headed to my mailbox) while still allowing time for all the Pi-ple a day or two decompression before Christmas, proper, begins.
I sometimes ride my Pi to the Forum.

Isn't the first day of winter the 1st? And the 22nd is the shortest day? (well the longest day here - summer Christmas FTW)

Black Mesa?

I have my money on the 12th of Jan - so I am not disappointed when December rolls past.

Keeping an eye on the TweetStream, I saw this snippet...
We're making 100 betas first, some of which will be auctioned b4 the end of the yr, then moving to mass production next month.

So the 2012 pundits have it and the optimists are out by a country mile. :-(

Oh well, lets wind down the anticipation levels a tad, I doubt I'll be getting involved in eBay bidding wars for the first 100. Ho for a quiet Christmas and New Year. OTOH its good that testing will not be skimped, that problems will be resolved and the Pi will function as envisaged.

Edit: I almost posted this in the "suck" thread, but decided to be more positive!
