That is sad news. His brilliant insights have led to GNU/Debian Linux, a very strong Linux distribution and the one Raspbian is based upon.

Very sad indeed. Debian has had a huge impact on my life. We owe him a lot.

I did not know he was involved in Docker, which I also use a lot now a days. Docker is used by the wonderful resin.io service to deploy applications to multiple remote Pi at the push of a button.

In any case the "ian" in Raspbian originates from him. Rest in peace Ian Murdock.

The "Guru" sounds like a crazy person.
"Murdock was also threatening to kill himself."

expandables,

I was hoping not to get into the circumstances of Ian's end. We, as yet, have no idea as to the reality of what happened. Perhaps we never will.

Also, remember that anyone of us can become a "crazy person" at anytime. For all kinds of reasons. The human brain is just another bodily organ that can fail.

It is reasonable to be curious - especially so in this current age of celebrity gazing.

That neither the cause or circumstances of the death have been made public will, naturally, get tongues wagging. It seems pretty clear at this point that he didn't die of old age/natural causes or any "normal" disease. But I am sure that it will all come out eventually. We can only wait and see.

I've already seen comparisons being drawn between Murdock and Hans Reiser (he of the eponymous file system) - as brilliant Linux/FOSS guys who eventually became victims of their own celebrity (a nice way of saying they foo'd up)

What you are talking about is involuntary insanity.
I am sure this Guru knew exactly what he was  ***.

QuietZone,
It is reasonable to be curious....
That is very true.
I've already seen comparisons being drawn between Murdock and Hans Reiser...
Which is of course a completely baseless pile of nonsense. Typical of the gibberish on the internet.

Remember, correlation does not prove causation.

Should we guess from this, for example, that Linus Torvalds will kill his wife or Richard Stallman will take out a school in a turkey shoot?

Stupid non-sense.

You actually don't know anything about what he knew, do you? People are sometimes fine and they take drugs and think they can fly. Sometimes people have a mental breakdown and do things without due consideration of the finality. If it helps you to cope to speculate, have at it, but it really doesn't add anything without any actual evidence.

Not a great comparison, Reiser is a convicted murderer. He didn't 'foo' up, or become a victim of celebrity - he murdered his wife. Name shouldn't even be in the same sentence. So, no further Reiser references please.
