Manufacturer Suggestions

Mon Dec 28, 2015 7:01 pm

Hello,

I am researching for a potential project. This year I had decided to build a new PC, entirely Linux based. I wanted to purchase a macro enabled mouse with full support in Linux. In my research I have found that Linux supports basic HID devices. But advanced features, like macro buttons, are features that Manufacturers just aren't interested in providing support for. So I'm doing research in order to develop a product line of high end Mice and Keyboards with a focus on Linux support. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good manufacturer candidate. Right now this is still a concept in my head, so I thought it would start getting to know who's out there while I'm mulling over the design. I know that you have to select a Manufacturer with your design needs in mind in order to be cost effective. So, I wanted to ask and see who the Raspberry Pi foundation uses to make the Pi devices.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Raspberry Pi is made by a Sony PCB plant in Wales. And in a PCB plant in China. Not much use for mouse manufacture.

Judging by your question I'm guessing you are way out of your depth. Have you ever brought any product to manufacture before? Do you have the odd million dollars available to do so? If you do can you afford to lose it? Do you have the design all worked out, circuit, sensors, case design, software, etc etc? Or are you intending to get a design house to do that?

Cheapest option is of course to get it made in China, but then you are going to have to pretty much live there to make sure they do it right. Or pay someone to do so.

What's wrong with mice under Linux anyway? I have a wireless optical mouse, three buttons including wheel. Does everything I need. Dirt cheap.

I think you are never going to break even trying to sell a specialist mouse.

Forget it, nobody needs that stuff. Nine out of nine of my Raspberries run headless.

Like the old joke about the Stock Market...the fastest way to make $1 million by making a new product is to start with $2 million.

There are tons of mice with programmable macro buttons. I am using Razer Naga series mice for gaming. They work just fine with Linux.

So you are a bit late with this invention...
