Re: The gods of Pi

Tue Nov 01, 2011 3:07 pm

I was just thinking about the ecosystem of Raspberry Pi, and how it seems to have evolved, and have come up with an analogy.
The Greco-Roman gods had some rather unsavoury habits - eating their kids and the like - but we could leave that side alone. Otherwise, we have
Eben as Zeus / Jupiter,
Gert as Hephaestus / Vulcan, and
Liz as Athena / Minerva (she seems to have been Zeus' daughter, but then this is only myth) or maybe Hera

In this view, the moderators are the High Priests, interceding for us with the gods - though the gods are willing to talk directly with us if we sacrifice many lambs.
And we mere mortals are the congregation, sometimes in need of chastisement but always loved by the gods.

And Broadcom, as Cronus, is Ineffable.

But it's getting better, because I'm on antibiotics.

Jamesh is obviously Mercury/Hermes.

I bet he's a right PITA on April Fool's day and is a little bit of a pyromaniac

Thought I was more of a Thor, with a big hammer.

Or something.

Perhaps Om the tortoise from Small Gods.

Yup. You can never get enough drink, that's my problem. Or naps.

R-Pi, once a charity, now a cult....

Does my purchase of a R-Pi contribute to the building of a Unidentified flying Pie to take us all to the land of Python??

Dionysus is the god of wine, ecstasy, and intoxication.

If it did not now have such a bad rap, I'd go for this God.
Then again, I still have cases of wine in storage. Maybe I'm not drinking enough to be a God.

Always, with friends. In your case, don't you need a drink or two to keep warm? [New England's early winter]

So we still need to find

Hades (Pluto) - underworld, but also hidden wealth. Who's in charge of finance? Jacklang!
Apollo - music, plague and prophecy. Four days after his birth, Apollo killed the chthonic dragon Python, which lived in Delphi. Could be an annoying detail.
Artemis / Diana - tied in, among other things, with young girls, which I suppose could vaguely be associated with teaching them something, i.e. computing.
Aphrodite - love and beauty, a bit wet really.
Ares / Mars - war. Hmm
Hermes / Mercury - messenger, but also patron of cowherds. Not sure that's useful.
Hestia / Vesta - home and hearth. Who does the vacuuming? (not Liz, we know, at least under the bed)
Ichnaea - tracking. Any ladies laying out the board? Otherwise, anyone got a model railway?

plus of course hundreds of others.
