melting acoustic foam ?

Mon Jul 09, 2012 10:44 am

I have an aged (15 yo) Sun server sitting in an airconditioned room, whirring away. Had to replace a fan last week and on opening the case found the acoustic(?) foam inside the case appeared to breaking down/melting in places and had deposited a blob of tar like substance onto some wires.

I've new come across anything like this before, wondered if anyone else had ? Would be very happy to know that it's nothing to worry about as it's likely to die properly if we try to relocate the hardware into a replacement case.

many thanks

The good news is, you'll have an excuse to upgrade that server... I suggest a smartphone ^^

I know: OS, I/O, Apps... but still...

foam like that will break down over the years, especially if heated. I'd at least try to remove as much of it as possible to stop it clogging fans and things.

Just a quick re-plug - I have a Netra T1-AC200 lying about, free to a good home (but shipping from France, obviously). Its foam is in a good state.

Thanks but we basically junk Netras. Found a spare 450 so will do a case swap :)
