Pi in the News: McDonalds / Kytch Kerfuffle

Wed Apr 28, 2021 3:05 am

Hope this is OK to post, story from Wired. A Raspberry Pi (4B, according to another source) is the core of this device whose use by some McD franchisees ruffled some feathers to the point that a legal fight has ensued.

USB on the wrong side to be a 4B, and these were developed some time ago.
Amazing story, nice to see Bunnie involved.

Seems like an opportunity for a better icecream maker.
Never liked soft serve anyway.
The machine was always broken, never got a chance to acquire the taste

For $18,000 (presumably USD) that's an expensive ice cream maker. I understand it's made with stainless steel and other expensive food-safe materials, but I think they should have focused on making a replacement ice cream machine instead of a diagnostics tool.

According to the article and other reports, franchisees don't have a choice about what machines they use for the menu items that this Taylor machine produces.

And the "hackers" were simply trying to solve a problem - help franchisees figure out what was going wrong with the machine, so they could have a chance of fixing it themselves, instead of having to so frequently resort to calling a technician (at great cost). That's how I read it, anyway.

No, according to the article franchises have another choice but its a lot harder to get replacement parts for when it does break. (I did read 70% of the article before using ctrl+F to find the Raspberry Pi relevant bit.)

What I was suggesting was that somebody should make a better soft serve machine and try to sell it to McDonalds head office.

Louis Rossmann has something to say about this story:

About the same price as those espresso machines you see at Startbucks. Also frequently busted and only serviceable by a authorized 'technician'.

How to make your arguments stronger? Longer is not the answer.

Only just came across this article today; it is an interesting story. I can definitely understand that the engineers got it to work once and moved on; meanwhile with the design lock-in they have, the unreliability became a profit center through service and replacement parts. It is my guess that something approaching monopoly power rarely works in favor of the consumer.
