Acronym/Nickname for "Raspberry Pi OS"

Thu Jan 07, 2021 2:14 am

Is there an official standing acronym for "Raspberry Pi OS"? It feels to be a handful to say when referring to the OS.
My friend suggested "RPOS", which would be pronounced as "R-Pos"

+1, though I add a hyphen in the two subversions.

I've been using RasPiOS, which is the string that's found in the names of more recent "Raspberry Pi OS" images.

I've been using RPiOS. I would only add the "32" or "64" in cases where it might be ambiguous. In most cases, the default is "32". I do expect that to change...eventually.

As have I. Most of the time I assume 32 bit given that the 64 bit version is still in beta. I'm guessing that at some (near) future point the default on some models (those with 64 bit capable SoCs) will change but for many things that won't actually matter.

32 vs 64 bit isn't likely to be an important factor in debugging a python script for example. Well not unless your python process needs to address/use more than 3GB of RAM.

I prefer simple PiOS. AFAIK first suggested by jamesh and rolls of the tongue unlike all the other options which sound like a bumpy ride. Also has the tinge of 'righteousness' to it.

Did I ever mention I hate to type?

Yep, I'm going for "PiOS". Short, sweet and as you say "righteous". Pretty sure everyone will know what I mean.

Oh no! If there's one thing I hate more than Object Oriented Programming Languages it's Object Oriented Operating Systems (OOOPS! lol).

Raspberry Pi Desktop AKA Debian with Raspberry Pi Desktop or Debian Buster with Raspberry Pi Desktop, but the directory and file is called rpd_x86/images/rpd_x86-2021-01-12/2021-01-11-raspios-buster-i386.iso. Here you can se RPD as one abbreviation and RasPiOS as another. They point out in the department in this forum for that OS that you may not call it Raspberry Pi OS or the earlier name Raspbian since it is just Debian Buster with some modifications. Also i386 in the name is probably wrong since you need i686 to run it.
Have Pi0&1A&1B&1B+&2B&3B&4B w/ rasPiOS. Started w/ BASIC on ABC80&ZX81 then Forth, Z80… https://scratch.mit.edu/users/mobluse/ https://github.com/mobluse/ https://twitter.com/mobluse/ https://YouTube.com/MOBiL4u/

It is i386 as that is how Debian name their distribution, and yes it should be i686.

So it would appear that in 2021 we have, if one wants to stick to Debian naming:

RaspiOS Buster ARMHF
RaspiOS Buster ARM64
RaspiOS Buster i386*

* yes the sticky needs updating ;)
The information is out there....you just have to let it in.
