We need a special device

Sat Mar 16, 2019 3:36 pm

Hello, We are an Egyptian company, we want to make a device dedicated to us. We want to integrate Raspberry pi with a small thermal printer. We want them integrated and we need a way to communicate directly with you.

Who is the "you" you wish to communicate with, being that you are currently communicating with RPi community?

AFAIK there is nothing stopping you making a device using either a standard RPi or a Compute Module and if you want a customised RPi then Element14 offer that service with a minimum order of 5000 units. Link to element14 RPi customisation docs

I think they are asking for help and need a way to communicate with a developer / maker directly rather than via the forum.

Looks like a very bad turn through Google's security scrambler (aka Translate).

Perhaps the OP could write in Arabic and the English folks can try a reverse Google scramble.

Not really considering, configuring the production line to make them takes time and costs a lot of money (whilst it is being done they aren't making anything else), so whether you have 1, 100, 1000 or 5000 that initial cost is the same. Once that is done the cost per board is very little (not counting the cost of materials). They will have done the maths and decided that the costs involved would make producing anything less than 5000 custom units prohibitively expensive and not worth their while.

That's not even taken into account the costs of having their engineers design the custom board in the first place.

Most of the hard design work is done the Pi's PCB.
Interfacing to the GPIO is easy for any electronics design guy.
You can plug onto the GPIO header or invert the Pi and plug it onto a motherboard.

Plenty of prototyping ways to use Pi's using plug on on wires.

So is the OP asking for help in designing the PCB the Pi' plugs into or a totally custom Pi PCB?
Not very clear what the requirement is.

Is there an alternative because we are still at the beginning of our project will need first to 100 devices and is likely to reach the first year to 10,000 pieces

As others have said, it depends on what you need customised.
You can order a regular CM3+ or similar Pi in bulk, but if you need a custom Pi, then the minimum is 5000, even if all you want is to leave a single part off.

You could then buy a custom carrier board in much smaller quantities, from 1, to 100, to possibly more.

Depends of the footprint you need.
Most thermal printers are small so I will assume a handheld device, in which case use a Zero.
If you need more processing power use the 3A+.
If you have the capability then use a CM but they are a bit harder to use and if you need RF expect RF EMC approval issues.

So for first 100, Zero or 3A+, once the software is proven and the money starts coming in then you can talk custom.
Either RS or Farnell, both have a license to make Pi variations?

You may do better to ask on places such as [urlhttps://www.guru.com]guru.com[/url] for a freelance engineer given the number you need to start with.

Some companies such as https://www.bitbox.co.uk can handle these quantities and will be able to guide you through the NDA process, testing and certification BUT you will need a good lawyer to handle contracts and patents

For any Maker who wants to accept the challenge, there is a Raspberry Pi Foundation blog post here which might contain a suitable design. https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/handhe ... est-smith/

Edit: that was written assuming the quantity required was rather less than 5000 following an early comment. Original follow up question here removed following clarification I had overlooked.

And perhaps the questioner could indicate how many of these devices are required?
100 to start with and then 10K first year (Mon 4:04 post) - bit above your average maker shop around here
