I need to hire someone to install Mosquito MQTT broker on a PI3

Thu Feb 01, 2018 9:04 pm

Hello Everyone!

I'm Terry from Houston Texas - USA. New to this Forum. it's easy to get lost for hours here. There is so much interesting stuff to read.

I need to hire someone to install Mosquito MQTT broker on a PI3 Image for me. I guess it doesn't really matter where you live as long as it's in the USA. Actually that doesn't matter for any other reason than I wouldn't know how to pay someone internationally. As I mentioned I'm in Houston, Texas but that doesn't really matter.

My thoughts were this: You already own a RPI3 and a spare memory card. You install Raspbian and Mosquitto Broker on your memory card and do some testing to ensure it's all working. Then make a image file of the disk and upload to a file server where I can download it from. Then I would install that image on a disk here and put it in my PI3.

I will probably have a few questions afterwards. I get the general concept of how to use a broker. Had success with io.adafruit, but would rather run my own broker. I tried installing it a few times on two separate PI3's months ago but it was too complicated. I'm sure if I put more hours in to it I could eventually get it going but I have a full time job and family tugging me in many directions.

If interested, please contact me.
If this isn't the correct place to post this type of request, please point my in the right direction.
Thanks in advance!
Terry

To anyone who might have similar needs, let me suggest as an alternative using something like Ansible, or using some other kind of configuration management software. I like Ansible for this because it doesn't require any extra software to be installed on the target machine (which is nice for the smaller RPi offerings) and it scales down pretty well to doing basic things like setting up a single piece of software (including updated versions, which is not something easily done by working off a fixed disk image).

Installing a broker is as simple as typing in

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install mosquitto mosquitto-clients
(assuming your using the latest 2017-11-29 Stretch image)

So I don't think you need pay anyone to do that for you :)

If you've got any more questions - just come back here and ask them

What are you using MQTT for BTW?

Hi Terry
shame you ran into trouble last time, If your ok with a not quite the latest version of mosquitto its only a few commands needed..

open a terminal session and type (copy n paste)

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

to bring your system upto date

then

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install mosquitto
to install the broker,

next install ways to talk to it

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install mosquitto-clients
and

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install python-mosquitto
commands lifted from here :http://www.switchdoc.com/2016/02/tutori ... pberry-pi/
PS you cant break your pi with a dodgy installation and you can always start again with a fresh version of the os ;)

Update.. as i performed a fresh install today i can confirm with the current download of stretch-lite
after the usual configuration disk expansion password change and update/upgrade

all you need do to install and run mosquitto automatically is

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install mosquitto
sudo apt-get install mosquitto-clients

then subscribe to a test topic hello/world ..

Code: Select all

mosquitto_sub -d -t hello/world
typo corrected its a - not a _ in mosquitto-clients..
now that will sit listening so open a 2nd terminal window and publish to the hello/world topic with something like:

Code: Select all

mosquitto_pub -d -t hello/world -m "Hello from Terminal window 2!"
and mosquitto will display the message in terminal #1 ;)

if you have any trouble flash the latest debian release with etcher onto your sd card..
