1.8" TFT LCD Shield board

Postby texy » Mon Apr 15, 2013 7:14 pm

Hi,
I have for sale a number of 1.8" TFT LCD module 'shield' boards that connect directly onto the Raspberry Pi :
Image

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLo2tNKb ... e=youtu.be

Features include :
direct connection to the Pi's GPIO port
GPIO port 'expansion', so that the unused GPIO lines can be used for other hardware
3 push buttons

To make full use of the display, it is strongly recommended that a custom Pi kernel and modules are compiled using the excellent instructions on M_Williams blog here :
http://marks-space.com/2012/11/23/raspberrypi-tft/
Note that the wiring of the shield to the LCD's control lines are the same as on Mark's blog, so use the same configuration that he used, with the exception of reversing RGB :

Code: Select all

ST7735 panel has reversed RGB? (FB_ST7735_RGB_ORDER_REVERSED) [N/y/?] (NEW) Y

This compilation is not for the feint hearted, but if I can do it, surely you can too ;-)

Price will be £18 plus postage for a read-built and tested board. PM me with your country or origin (to calculate postage) and your paypal email address and I will send you an invoice.
Note also that number of boards are very limited for this first batch.
Thanks,
Texy

Hi,
the 'benefit' is that its a ready made solution - no wires, soldering or assembly required ;)

Thanks,

Thanks to the excellent work by Notro, you no longer need to compile the kernel.
Follow the instructions in this link : viewtopic.php?f=64&t=40677&p=333346#p333346

Hi,
airmail to Europe is £4.25, unless you want 'signed-for', which is considerably more....................
Thanks,

Hi,
you can pm, now ;)
No, you do not need additional power. Obvoiusly more current is drawn when the shield is attached. I must check current draw for the display, but I,m sure it will be at a minimum level.

Hi,

Are you able to put up a picture showing the side profile of the shield mounted on the RPi? Also, are you can you tell me how the shield is secured to the RPi (just via the header?) and which GPIO pins it uses?

Thanks

Hi,
yes I can post a picture later ;)
For the wiring connections, the display uses the standard SPI gpio lines as in this diagram :
http://marks-space.com/?attachment_id=119
Plus also the 3 buttons canuse

Code: Select all

UP  = 13     # gpio pin 21 = UP
DOWN  = 2    # gpio pin 13 = DOWN
SELECT  = 11 # gpio pin 26 = LEFT

I say can use because if you do not intend to use them then those 3 gpio lines are available for your own use.
All of the other gpio lines are available via the extra gpio port in the design.
Also yes, it is only attached via the gpio port however, it does nicely rest on the ethernet and composite connectors.

Thanks,
Texy

Would this screen work with RaspBMC?

It'll work if someone writes the software to drive it. Worth asking on the raspbmc forum ?

These are superb displays. I had mine working the same day I had it.
Just enable the display and edit the cmdline.txt (in my case add a rotate here and select a smaller font)
I now have my Pi internet radio with a nice colour display. I just need to learn a little more Python to format the screen output a little better.
I did get a little confused when the pi rebooted with all 3 buttons pressed at the same time - it was the insulating pad in the wrong place - the 3.3v was touching the metalwork of the RJ45 Jack. Easy fix.
The display also seems to have a hidden MicroSD socket underneath it which is wired to the same connections as the buttons so it's one or the other.

These are great displays and well worth the money. The buttons give your Pi project an easy professional look. Nice one Texy.

Many thanks for the kind words, and apologies for the missed placed pad. On the next version the switches are moved slightly to avoid that potential problem.
Incidentally, the micro-sd card slot does not share the gpio buttons as it is not wired in at all (if I remember correctly).
I've not got one in front of me, but I can confirm it later.

Cheers

I ordered my shield board last week and it arrived quickly and is very good quality. 30 minutes after setup (downloading the revised image and associated instructions), followed by my first foray into pygame and instant success. The little screen gives a much better quality display than I had envisaged. Thoroughly recommended and excellent value for money - thanks Texy!
