Hi folks,
there have been some code changes and vaste speed improvements by utilising the hardware SPI function by forum member bgreat.
Nokia Pi LCD modules shipped from now on will be modified to make use of these improvements. See the python thread from this post onwards :

Cheers,

Texy, though I've read the thread, not sure what the mods are to your board (as I'd like to do them to the board I already have). Can you be a bit more specific??

Re: 'Nokia 3310' type LCD add on board

Hi sportsnapper,
yeah - no problem.
There are three lines that need to change.
Currently they are wired thus :

LCD pin 2 = SCE = 2 # physical gpio pin 13
LCD pin 5 = SCLK = 5 # physical gpio pin 18
LCD pin 4 = DIN = 4 # physical gpio pin 16

To use the hardware SPI, they need to be changed to :

LCD pin 2 = SCE = 10 # physical gpio pin 24 = wiringpi no. 10 (CE0 BCM 8)
LCD pin 5 = SCLK = 14 # physical gpio pin 23 = wiringpi no. 14 (SCLK BCM 11)
LCD pin 4 = DIN = 12 # physical gpio pin 19 = wiringpi no. 12 (MOSI BCM 10)

You'll need to cut the existing tracks to all three lines to the LCD and add 3 new wires as above. I modified a bare pcb before fitting a LCD to modify it, so it was easier, but as yours will already have an LCD fitted, it may be a little more difficult to find suitable places to cut the tracks. If I get time later I will take photo's of the bare board and suggest suitable cutting places.
Hope this helps,
Texy

I've been playing with one of Texy's LCD's and been a bit puzzled by the contrast behaviour. I assumed from the comments in the various python scripts that the necessary contrast setting varied from LCD to LCD, so once you had figured out the correct value for your particular LCD unit, you shouldn't have to alter it.
What I found with mine though is that I got different results with the same screen between using it with one RPi and another. My late model Pi was optimised at 0xbf, but the same screen with an early model needed 0xa3 - quite a difference!

The figure is also temperature dependant, but I,ve seen so many now that I don't keep tabs. As you say though - they do tend to be around the range you mention.

Texy, what's the situation with text display? Am I right in thinking there's no character set in firmware, the character set is just loaded in software. Your reply to asa_g has confused me as it refers to the 44780 LCD, which I believe does hold a character set in its firmware, whereas I thought the 3310 LCD is just a directly driven graphics display. All the scripts contain font data, so I assumed you had to supply the data for each character.

The examples in the test scripts are all 5x7 bitmapped fonts, has anyone got a script that displays any other font size?

Hi,
yes you are correct on all points. I realised I gave bum info later, but I didn't get any reply from them.
As you say, the LCD is dumb and need to know the font details - I just goggled and found what I needed (as explained in the support thread in
the python forum). I think I did find some code for larger fonts, so there is something to be goggled.

Hi Jeroen,
welcome to the forum. The cost to ship to the Netherlands will be £4.25. Even shipping 2 modules is less than 100gms, so price will be the same.
Cheers,

Hi,
Send me a pm with your PayPal email address and I will send you an invoice.
Note also I have just released a shield type board - connects to the Pi without a cable :

- it may be more suitable to your needs?

Texy,
Received my board on Tuesday of this week, and have had great fun " tinkering" with code samples from this forum. I am a complete beginner with Linux / python, and I had text in various fonts, bitmap pictures etc. all displaying on this little screen in no time at all :D If I can do it then any noob can! One thing; I had to alter the display contrast value to 0xb7 to get a picture - so if no picture is evident on yours, try that first. Our 11 year old Grandson is impressed with Graddad's efforts ;)
Thanks texy.

Martin
