Equipment Wish List

Fri Feb 12, 2016 12:37 pm

Hi all, I've received some funding to set up a Pi Club in Dundee and am looking for advice on which hats and electronic addons to buy.
The group will be open to all ages - children and adults. The organisers will have some UNIX / programming knowledge but not necessarily circuit building/electronics experience. So I'm looking for some relativly easy to set up kit that will be interesting to all ages.

I've looked at the CamJam EduKits which I'll probably go with (especially the robots one!) unless I can find a cheaper way to buy the components seperatly?
There is a huge choice in other hats and add-one though - so recommendations, comments, advice appreciated!

Thanks
- Angie

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but you can get some extra components in this kit...

http://www.amazon.com/CanaKit-Raspberry ... ds=canakit

It has the bonus of including the Raspberry Pi, a case, HDMI cable, and everything else you need to get started, not just some jumper wires and lights. Maybe if some one doesn't have a Pi yet they would want to get a kit like this instead of ordering separately?

Best of luck with your club, I'd like to start one myself this year!

Hi Angie,
I'm Mike Horne, one of the creators of the EduKits. Thanks for considering using the kits. Fresh stocks of EduKit 3 are now in the country. Jamie at The Pi Hut will be adding them to the site inventory in the next week, we hope (the Pi 3 launch interrupted things, but we're back on track now). We've tried our hardest to get the price of all the EduKits down as much as we can, but if you source the components from China yourself, you might be able to get larger quantities of the basic components slightly cheaper (though of course the shipping times from China might put you off).

I can also recommend the SenseHAT, purely because of how many sensors there are on it, in addition to the 8x8 matrix display. Another one to consider is the Explorer HAT Pro as it gives you some touch-capacitive buttons, easy to use prototyping area and analog input possibilities.

Hope that helps!
