Rebooting Oxford Raspberry Jam

Tue Nov 10, 2015 10:58 am

EDIT, 2016-03-02: Next Oxford Jam is on the 4th of May 2016!

It's been an awfully long time since we had a Pi Jam in Oxford, so I have a proposal.

Oxford Hackspace have finally taken possession of their new premises, courtesy of Science Oxford in the basement of what used to be Macclesfield House, the big grey office building next to Oxford castle mound. It'a a big space, it has all sorts of exciting stuff coming to it, and most importantly for our purposes they are open to Oxford Raspberry Jam having periodic meetups there.

The suggestion is that a Wednesday night would be appropriate, and we've settled on the 9th of December.
We turn up and follow the tried and tested show-and-tell format. A small donation to Oxford Hackspace would probably be appreciated, but not mandatory. Perhaps you'd appreciate a hackspace tour while you're there. Several workshops are awaiting their tooling but there is still plenty to talk about.

I have one or two juicy things to show that I've done with my Pis since we last met, I hope you do too.

Hi. Have you also seen that Science Oxford (who are also based in that building) are hosting an event on December 2nd together with CodeClub - https://www.facebook.com/events/874908762628418/

Absolutely, and indeed it's exactly the same venue. It's all going down at Oxford Hackspace.

But Code Club is a very different constituency to a Raspberry Jam. Even if there is some crossover between the attendees - and now the organisations. I for instance have very little interest in teaching kids to code, while I'm guessing an Arduino Code Club regular has little interest in my Pi used for amateur radio.

A bit more info, now we are closer to the event.

When: Wednesday the 9th of December, 19:30 onwards

Where: Oxford Hackspace, Oxford Centre for Innovation, New Rd, Oxford OX1 1BY

More details a bit closer to the day: http://oxhack.org/.

It starts at 19:30 because there is an event in the building before that time.
I'm arranging for OxHack's big projector to be available for demos during our usual show-and-tell.

So, I look forward to seeing you there!

Morning all,
A reminder that Oxford Raspberry Jam will take place tomorrow evening .

Where? Oxford Hackspace, Oxford Centre for Innovation, New Rd, Oxford OX1 1BY

When? Wednesday the 9th of Dec 2015, 19:30 onwards

Details: Oxford Centre for Innovation is the ugly grey building next to Oxford castle mound. If you are a longtime Oxford resident you may remember its former life as the county education department. Oxford Hackspace is in the basement. If you turn up at 7:30 you'll find a notice on the door, you'll need to ring through and someone will come up and let you in. The hacksace's number is 01865 261462. Google Maps link: https://goo.gl/maps/Q5rogPgEiz62

How to get there Oxford city centre is not always the nicest place to drive into, but by 7:30 the worst of the traffic should have died down. Your best bet for coming into town will be the A420 Botley Road which comes into Oxford from the west. Drive until you go under a railway bridge, then you'll be in a big square with a group of three roundabouts. Straight over the first one, right at the second, left at the third, down the right hand side of the Royal Oxford Hotel into Park End Street. On the left just before the lights at the end of Park End Street will be Worcester Street car park, which is on the opposite corner of the road junction outside the hackspace building.
The hackspace is well served for public transport, being a short walk from Oxford station and the myriad buses that stop there. Alternatively there are park-and-ride buses aplenty.

Is there a report anywhere on the previous event? How did it go? I'm hoping to attend, if work allows!

I don't think anyone did a report, sadly.

It went pretty well though for a new event, I can't remember offhand the exact numbers but there was a group of people there from the earlier incarnation of Oxford Jam plus a number of Oxford Hackspace people.

There doesn't seem to be much publicity for the event. Does it have a Twitter feed or Facebook page? I know it has a Google Groups page, but surely you want some non-geeks to come along as well!

I'm very tempted, Oxford is only an hour away (A34 permitting). I'll decide at 17:30 tomorrow.

Great to meet you all yesterday evening. Here's hoping that we can build the Oxford Jam into something bigger.

And thanks for the lift home, Alex.

Alex, Jenny & Darren it was extremely good to meet you all.

Pick a date in September and the crazies from Basingstoke should be able to turn up again. I'll also mention it to the other SWAB Pi IG folks when I see them (everyone is always welcome at the Roebuck PH on the second Wed in a month).
