Raspbian is well supported via the foundation and others ,
but Arch is supposed to be more bare-bones.
C/C++ would be a good choice for high performance IMHO.

Arch Linux Arm aka alarmpi, but has less packages available for the ARMv6 then Debian based Raspbian "Wheezy" http://archlinuxarm.org/packages

If want BETA there is always the minimalist piCore http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.ph ... ,57.0.html

Raspbian is highly recommended for beginner's which doesn't mean it's substandard just because it's recommended for beginner's.
It has the best software support which in my opinion is why it qualifies as the best OS for your Raspberry Pi.
As for media centre XBMC is the way to go i.e. OpenELEC, Xbian or Raspbmc (I prefer OpenELEC I find it's the most responsive and fits nicely onto a 1GB SD Card).

Unless you want to use C#/Mono, in which case, Raspbian doesn't work properly. But then, neither do most of the other distros on the distros page... I'll start a separate thread on this topic, as I don't mean to hijack this one. Just pointing it out in case the original poster might care about Mono support.
