For WiFi to work, you need to install the linux-firmware package.

I just found out that a readymade image of ARM64 Ubuntu Server 18.04 is available for the Raspberry Pi 3! It is available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/18.04/beta/. This image also works out of the box with the Pi 3B+. Simply download the image and write it to an SD card just like you would for a Raspbian image.
Thank you so much for sharing this!

I had been struggling for about a week with the ARM/RaspberryPi instructions on the ubuntu.com wiki to install Ubuntu "Classic" ARMHF on my 3B+ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/RaspberryPi. I was just about to give up and start over and try CentOS ARM instead when I found this forum post with the link to http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/18.04/beta/

Within 30 minutes I was successfully running Ubuntu 18.04 on my 3B+. Many thanks!

If you let me know what part(s) of the wiki instructions you had a problem with then I'll improve them if I can.

I installed Ubuntu Server 18.04 ARM64 on my Raspberry Pi 3B using the prebuilt beta image. I installed the Xubuntu desktop, switched to using the Pi's built-in bootloader instead of u-boot, and enabled the VC4 graphics acceleration driver. glxgears gave me around 60fps, and I was able to play Neverball although I had to turn off all the effects like shadows for a smooth experience.

However, Chromium was laggy even when viewing only a couple of webpages. I'd suggest using uBlock Orgin for a smoother experience.

I like this image. It's great for a 64-bit Raspberry Pi server, and can also be used as a desktop setup. This image will work on the Pi 3B+ out of the box so if you're looking to run Ubuntu on your 3B+, then this image is a great way to start.

There are other adjustments you should do to config.txt. Out of the box the image is running at a reduced clock speed. You need to also turn on sound.

Boot time is slowed by cloud image packages. So remove them.

To run a browser you definitely need swap or zram. Browsing is smoother under an opengl window manager/compositor.

Personally I think it is better to install via the Debian/ubiquity installers than the cloud/server images. You benefit from language/keyboard/etc setup and have your own username.

So did this actually work for anyone but me?
Pretty solid directions. I was able to setup my raspberry Pi3b using 18.04.2 LTS using these directions. Not for the noob. Ran into a few syntax issues and slight changes with the updated os but you definitely got me to where I needed to be for my pi-hole

Hi all,

I seem to have done something wrong..
I followed the steps (with some minor syntax issues) but when I boot my pi it just tries to do a tftpboot of some kind and eventually fails

I read messages that other people are successful with this method..
So where did I go wrong?

Any help is appriciated

I did manage to get one step further..
I do now have the grub loader where I can choose 'Install' . But my keyboard is not working..
I have read that others had this problem but what is the fix ??

Thanks in advance

I've fixed this by borrow my friends keyboard, plug it to my screen, and plug the screen USB to raspberry pi. really strange.
Now that prepuilt image is avaliable, maybe you can use that to bypass this problem.
