Ubuntu-Mate for armv8 (arm64)???

Sun Jan 28, 2018 12:10 am

Hi, I have tried to load Ubuntu (Mate) for a ARMv7 (32 bit) several times without any luck. I got an error massage saying about Kernel Panic...

But I have a raspberry-pi 3 model B+ (therefore 64 bit). I assume that since my arm is 64 bit, the Ubuntu-mate for arm 32 bit is the culprit. Am I correct or wrong?

I would like to know what flavour of Ubuntu-mate would work with my Pi 3 B+ (64 bit)? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Raspbian Stretch & Ubuntu-Mate are ARM32.

As Ubuntu-Mate is a community release, it may be better to ask them about issues:

See https://ubuntu-mate.org/raspberry-pi/. AFAIK, this is the only mate distro that will work on an RPi.

The Ubuntu-Mate image is a total hack job, which hasn't been updated for ages. There is only one version of an SD card image and that is 32bit. This should in theory work on pi's 2 to 3.

BUT Ubuntu-mate is not Ubuntu. You can install 32 bit or 64 bit versions of Ubuntu on a pi 3. It is very simple to then add the Mate desktop so you can essentially have a 64bit version of Ubuntu-mate.

This won't, however, bring the speed improvements you are hoping for https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/ubuntu- ... el-b/15867

I really, really appreciate your reply. I don't know why others did not tell me that since I asked for advice for months. Your feedback will be very useful.

Concerning the performance, I just realized that my Pi was not a model 3. I bought I bought the Pi 3 b+, when in fact, was Raspberry B, without saying is it is an arm6, 7 or 8. So I bought the brand new, certified Pi 3 B Plus. I think that my problem with performance may be improved (maybe a lot).

So, I will compare the increase performance with the old Pi. It will be useful for computer interconnection experimentation/study and eventually, an intelligent controller of a small vehicle with 4 wheels drive.

Thank you.

You need ARM32 or ARM64 Ubuntu suitable for the RPi 3B, please provide a link to the downloads..

If you are new to computers and/or the raspberry pi then it is best to stick with raspbian. Ubuntu-mate should work on the pi3, but it is not problem free.

Unfortunately there is no decent place to discuss Ubuntu on the pi. If you ask a question on here you just get directed to the Ubuntu-mate forum. That forum tends to be populated by novice users. If you want to install 64 bit Ubuntu on the pi, then there are a number of manual steps to go through. Unless you are familiar with grub2, the pi firmware files and the debian installer this might be too much of a challenge. If you know about those things, or a least some of them, then you can give it a go. The Ubuntu raspberry pi wiki page is a starting point.

And now trying mate on this 64bit image. Works!
