Preconfigured Ubuntu 15.04 image with extras

Wed Jun 17, 2015 4:19 pm

I have uploaded a preconfigured version of Ubuntu MATE 15.04 for Raspberry Pi 2 here (1.4GB RAR download for compressed 4GB image).

This image is already configured and boots immediately to a functional desktop. It was configured to British settings (this can easily be changed in locale settings). Username and password are the same as on Raspbian: pi and raspberry.

This can easily be extracted and written to micro-SD (for 8GB card or higher) on MS Windows using 7zip and Win32DiskImager. For Linux follow the instructions on the Ubuntu MATE Raspberry Pi 2 page, adjusting the filename appropriately.

Note that this image needs to have its file system resized before use, as its file system is very full.
Instructions from the Ubuntu MATE page, using the Terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo fdisk /dev/mmcblk0
Delete the second partition (d, 2), then re-create it using the defaults (n, p, 2, enter, enter), then write and exit (w). Reboot the system, then:

Code: Select all

sudo resize2fs /dev/mmcblk0p2
In addition to MATE, this image contains LXDE pre-installed with some configuration from Raspbian, which boots by default.

In addition to Mozilla Firefox, this image contains Chromium browser, configured to launch in Incognito mode by default with smooth scrolling enabled. Pepper Flash is easily installable via the Terminal. Minimal Kiosk Browser is also preinstalled as a lightweight alternative.

Also preinstalled are:
- Kodi 14.2 with YouTube plugin
- omxplayerGUI
- Minecraft Pi
- Pi Store
- Ubuntu Software Center
- LibreOffice
- Scratch
- IDLE and IDLE3
- PyGame and Python Games
- Geany IDE
- Brandy BASIC (BBC BASIC clone)
- Synaptic Package Manager
- GParted
(- Bonus app: Wisdom of the Epicurean Philosophers)

Easily installable via Terminal - Instructions:
- Sonic Pi
- Oracle Java 7 and 8
- Chromium Pepper Flash
- Pi3D

The Ubuntu Software Center also contains many great applications such as GIMP, Audacity, CodeBlocks and many more which perform well on the Pi 2, and are easily installable without touching a terminal, to complete your setup with this image. I also recommend installing the Ubuntu restricted extras from the Software Center.

Also installable is the full Lubuntu desktop which also adds some lightweight applications:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop
Have fun with this image. I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone is interested in seeding this, and any testing!

Hi,
Many thanks for this image. It works well with all the software needed.
I have changed the default user "pi" for a new name and then kodi didn't work anymore
I made install/reinstall with raspian packages with no success (and dependencies problem)
Could you please explain how to reinstall kodi on ubuntu arm ?

Apologize for my very bad english

Hi,

I'm having fun installing your image - many thanks.

Question: You refer back to this post: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=112253
for for instructions on how to install
- Sonic Pi
- Oracle Java 7 and 8
- Chromium Pepper Flash
- Pi3D

Can I assume that these are the only items not rolled up in your image? Otherwise, Would it be possible for you to clarify which bits have been rolled up and which not?

Many thanks!

Hi Mequa,

I want to install Kodi myself on a freshly installed Ubuntu mate 15.04 OS. Which repository did you use installing Kodi?

Regards,

Rob
