Ubuntu 15.04 / Mate for Raspberry Pi 2

Just got Ubuntu Mate (15.04) .img loaded and after some fine tuning. It runs great.

Just follow the instructions for downloading and installing the image (.img).

You don't need to do the build I just used the image.

after configuring I set up config.txt with this (yes I have heat sinks installed):

#uncomment to overclock the arm. 700 MHz is the default.
arm_freq=900
core_freq=450
sdram_freq=450
over_voltage=6

and I also found that using the MPEG-2 and VC-1 license keys by purchasing them from the Pi Store really helps with the screen redraw speed.

All in all, I'm impressed.

Total time to get it all running a couple of hours.

I have found a wealth of information on this forum, and just wanted to pass this along.

I'm also runnint Ubuntu Mate, and notice a peculial issue: I have System Monitor running, and it indicates that I am continuously receiving network data. Not sending anything, just receiving. It has been running for a little over 24.5 hours continuously, and has received 36.0 MiB. Anyone have a clue?

great image, i'ts running faster than ubuntu 14.04 linearo image. monitor suspend does not work. I'm trying to run mame/ mess, but it is very slow, i can't even choose anything in the menu to run a game.

I have also just got mate running on raspberry pi 2 that I just bought locally. Its a good step up from my old revision 2 B board. This kind of what I consider "full" linux os on such a small, relatively cheap board is amazing...

However it seems it's using between 30-50 percent on each core simply idling with just the system operations running. (it favors core 1,2,3 over 4...) (Its a fresh install with only 2 custom programs installed and neither are running)

Any Idea if this is normal ?

Running default install at forced 1280x720p and oversampled to fill my 1080p monitor.

No, that doesn't sound normal at all. I didn't experience anything like that when I was playing around with it for a few days. I don't have it installed on any cards at the moment.

I seem to have it down to around 0-15 percent most of the time now. Not sure what was up. Running just system monitor jumps to 14-20.

I tried this distro 4 days ago and wasn't impressed, but just loaded it again since being added to NOOBS and it rocks. I have only been using it for a few hours but it is faster and more desktop alternative friendly than Raspbian in my opinion. I have been using Ubuntu flavors (mainly Xubuntu) for the last 7 years so this isfamiliar, user friendly, and fast. Thanks for the great work

How about adding this to BerryBoot?

That would have several advantages over NOOBS, namely the ability to share a partition with Raspbian and OpenELEC will all the space available to all OS's.

Also, I know this is Ubuntu MATE, but it would be nice to be able to run it with LXDE as well particularly with the enhancements found in Raspbian...

I've had similar problems before on the Pi 2 running Raspbian on an inadequate power supply with power-hungry USB peripherals. For some reason that would max out an ARM core (just one, to 25%). See if upgrading to a 2A power supply fixes any such issues.

I'm trying to run tvcatchup.com via Firefox, but when I choose my TV channel it says: "Error loading player, No playable sources found."

Can anyone help on how to get the stream working?

I've had similar problems before on the Pi 2 running Raspbian on an inadequate power supply with power-hungry USB peripherals. For some reason that would max out an ARM core (just one, to 25%). See if upgrading to a 2A power supply fixes any such issues.

I don't think thats it since I only had a wifi and unifying logitech receiver connected, but if i can find a better PSU i'll try it out. Thanks for the suggestion.

Has Ubuntu Mate been added to NOOBS? I cannot see it.

If you're a user with enough expertise to use Ubuntu Mate you do NOT need NOOBS. Take a look whether it's included with Berryboot if you really need a multi-boot manager (rather than the more simple option of sdcard swapping).

Using a HDMI eGalaxTouch type touch screen with natural resolution 1280X600

I have set up a ubuntu distro Ubuntu/Linaro, it is OK.

With the Mint 15.04, I have a problem with GUI not filling the whole screen.

It does fill the whole screen without doing anything else with Raspbian, OpenElec, and Ubuntu/Linaro,

but with Mint 15.04, there are huge black borders around the screen.
I tried to change the file config.txt, but all it did was change resolution inside the same size screen
with same black borders.

Can you advise how to make it expand to the whole screen as it does for other distros?

I just installed Ubuntu Mate from the image I downloaded onto a Raspberry Pi 2. Mostly it seems okay, but sometimes a bit slow, including in Firefox, but it is pretty awful in YouTube, or when playing an audio file in Audacious, Rhythmbox or VLC. It plays very stuttery in the audio apps, and there is no sound at all in VLC. I already added my user account to the Audio group, so it should play audio okay, but it's not good. I also own a Raspberry Pi B on which I run OpenElec, connected to my TV via HDMI. It plays music and videos perfectly, never had a problem, yet the new R Pi has more RAM, more CPU but cannot cope with music in Ubuntu Mate.
So what is going on and why these problems? I am using an 8 GB Micro SD card (partition resized to fill the card), no other USB drives at present, using a USB keyboard and mouse, and audio is coming via the HDMI plugged into monitor which has a headphone socket into which I have plugged headphones.

I installed gstreamer mp3 codec from software centre and it made no difference to mp3.
Then I installed ogg converter and converted an mp3 file to ogg and then the ogg file played perfectly.
So what are the difficulties with playing mp3 caused by?

The thing is mpg123
./configure --with-cpu=arm_fpu --with-default-audio=alsa

Potential problems:

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib:/usr/lib/mpg123
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib:/usr/local/lib/mpg123

I have not changed anything, but now my Pi is having difficulties playing ogg files as well, even though it played them perfectly a few days ago.
