RISC OS on Raspberry Pi 2?

Tue Feb 03, 2015 11:48 pm

Reposted from "The Raspberry Pi 2 Q&A thread" in general discussion, as this pertains to RISC OS Pi:

I noticed that RISC OS Pi is not currently compatible with Raspberry Pi 2. (The same with OpenELEC, and possibly other OS's.) Will RISC OS Pi be updated to support the new Raspberry Pi 2, including with a new NOOBS image, I am wondering?

I am also wondering whether NutPi will be supported on a version of RISC OS Pi compatible with Raspberry Pi 2, given how this commercial RISC OS software was locked to the Raspberry Pi hardware.

I think you'll find those things are compatible they just aren't exploiting the hardware changes.

Attempting to install RISC OS via the latest NOOBS suggests otherwise. It's very early days for the Raspberry Pi 2, though, so they may have made their update to Raspbian (including the NOOBS version) the priority, with a working RISC OS Pi on NOOBS coming later.

I don't have a working spare micro-SD card to image RISC OS Pi separately, I was looking to dual-boot it with Raspbian via NOOBS which worked on my original Raspberry Pi Model B. This doesn't seem to be working on the Pi 2 yet, it gives an error/warning message when you attempt to install RISC OS Pi via NOOBS on the Raspberry Pi 2, saying it is not compatible with the Raspberry Pi 2. If you install it anyway, it will not boot.

The daily build of RISC OS should now work on the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B.

Hi there,

From the horse's mouth, via RISC OS Open's Twitter feed (https://twitter.com/risc_os/status/562255239659536386):
Pi 2 is out today! Luckily, we've had one for a while now so the RISC OS build should be made public very soon...

How about RISC OS Pico for Raspberry Pi 2 Model B?

(Edit: and original Raspberry Pi model B+)

Question: Are the Raspberry Pi Foundation preparing an updated NOOBS image containing an installable RISC OS Pi compatible with Raspberry Pi 2 Model B?

I'd like to dual-boot RISC OS Pi with Raspbian (and maybe OpenELEC too) on my Raspberry Pi 2 Model B's 32GB microSD card, and get my copy of NutPi working on it too.

AFAIK it's up to the RISC OS people to deliver a Pi2B compatible image...

Where can I get a nightly / daily build?

I'm interested in developing for RiscOS

Who's reposible for the Raspberry PI[2] / RiscOS version? I'd like to contact him about this.

There's a RISC OS computer show on Saturday 21st February. Hopefully a new release, Pi 2 compatible, will be available then. The previous SD card image (called RC12a) which is a RISC OS only image can be made to work on the model 2 by downloading the latest Pi firmware from github and the latest daily build rom from the ROOL site.

It's just not been packaged in a single place yet. Once it is NOOBS will, no doubt, follow.

I've successfully got RISC OS running on Pi 2, including with the NOOBS version installed alongside other OS's. It requires updated firmware, updated ROM and updated config.txt settings to boot on the Pi 2. Patching it is the same for the NOOBS version. I included that in a recent torrent I uploaded of a 32GB image of 4 OS's for Pi 2.

Some NutPi software refuses to run (as I expected), as with the ARMv7 it detects it as not running on a Raspberry Pi, and this software was restricted to run only on the Pi. Hopefully that will be patched soon. Photodesk runs well though, much faster than GIMP on Raspbian.

The RISC OS Raspberry Pi SD card image has been updated to RC14 see here: https://www.riscosopen.org/news/ which runs on all models (that is models A, A+, B, B+ and the model 2) and is available pre-flashed onto an SD card from ROOL. Using firmware (bootcode.bin, start.elf and fixup.dat) from 30 Jan 2015 it also runs on the Compute Module.

The SD card image will be available to download in due course and will also be available as part of NOOBS in due course.

The changes are described here: http://www.svrsig.org/WhatsNew.htm and updated benchmarks are here: http://www.svrsig.org/HowFast.htm

That's very nice, but how about a version compatible with BerryBoot? Could it be done?

I know BerryBoot is for Linux OS's and RISC OS Pi doesn't use a compatible filesystem, but could it possibly be modified to replace the RISC OS Filecore partition with a mounted file image on an EXT4 partition?

The RISC OS Open download page still features the old RC12a image as per 23rd February 2015.

What is different in Berryboot when compared to NOOBS (which will feature RISC OS for the model 2 quite soon)?

RC14 is there as of now (23-Feb-2015 2200)

Unlike NOOBS, BerryBoot is not compatible with the RISC OS Filecore partition needed to boot RISC OS Pi. It appears BerryBoot only supports Linux OS's for now.

This is a problem for me as I recently switched from using NOOBS to BerryBoot (which otherwise has many advantages over NOOBS), and would prefer not to have to swap micro-SD cards to boot RISC OS Pi, if possible.

Another problem with this version of RISC OS Pi, having just tried the latest release on my Raspberry Pi 2 Model B, is that some of the software included in the commercial NutPi bundle, which I paid £35 plus VAT and P&P for, refuses to work on the Raspberry Pi 2.

As an example, MoreDesk gives the following error message: "This program can only be run on a Raspberry Pi".
Some other NutPi applications also refuse to run on the Pi 2.

PhotoDesk runs well, however. The Desktop Development Environment also installs correctly (I haven't tested it beyond the lengthy installation).

I understand that this is being worked upon...
