Some software you may like

Sat Dec 08, 2012 9:50 am

Hi,

I decided couple of month ago to port software to RISC OS with one aim in mind : optimize the ports for ARMv6 and higher.

At the moment you can enjoy couple of ports at http://www.norisc-nofun.co.uk/Software.html

!FastDosbox is a fork of dosbox implementing a dynrec x86 emulation for ARM, it is probably faster than any other ports that have been released on RISC OS so far.
http://www.norisc-nofun.co.uk/downloads ... ox_1.0.zip

If you are (like me) frustrated of the performance of Doom even under FastDosbox or if you simply want to enjoy the closest version from the original or even fancy a deathmatch with friends, then you may enjoy my port of Chocolate Doom.
http://www.norisc-nofun.co.uk/downloads ... oom170.zip

I also have been a fan of the Atari ST computers, my beagle board and Raspberry Pi are each actually hosted in an Atari ST case, to even better enjoy the experience I ported hatari to RISC OS, and it appears that this port is faster than the existing version on Linux for the RPi.
http://www.norisc-nofun.co.uk/downloads/hatari162-1.zip

Finally, just for the fun of it, for the first time ever here is a port of Rise of the Triad for RISC OS, it is fast, funny.
http://www.norisc-nofun.co.uk/downloads/ROTT_1_5.zip

I hope you will have fun with these software

Hi, you will need !UnixHome installed to run ROTT.

Let me know if it does the trick.

!UnixHome does indeed enable the game to run but it also causes RISCOS to generate multiple error messages when booting forever after.

Intreguing game but I'm not sure its worth the irritation.

:?

If anyone can help me to reverse this I would be grateful.

Infact I will now have to re-flash as its b******d up my pi - no other apps will run.

AVOID

thanks for the thought Franck - can you fix this for me?

What did you do with UnixHome exactly and what error messages do you get? I assume you already did the obvious thing and deleted UnixHome?

In fact, I am surprised that you have trouble with UnixHome, as all what is does is to provide a "unixfied" path to a folder inside of UnixHome. In this folder applications ported from Unix/Linux can store their configuration files.

It may have put something in !Boot.Choices.Boot (Hold down shift while it's booting to disable most of the boot, so you can drill down there)
Move anything suspicious out of there and see what happens - you may well screw something else up, but you can put it back afterwards.

Hi,

I am sorry that you experience bad luck with unixhome.

The package I am using can be used here :
http://www.riscos.info/packages/arm/Sup ... 1.03-1.zip

Just to let you know, most of the software ported from the unix world are using !unixhome, and I never got any issue so far with it.

I actually don't know about the version of Chris and as a consequence don't know the potential side effects of the version you tried.

If you can describe with some details the issue you are facing, that will help to understand what is going on.

Sincerely,

Franck

Great, thanks :-). Are there no sound effects?

I got sound (grunts and groans but no music)

I had no idea how to use !UnixHome so I made it run on boot.

The error messages I get are 'The access details set for this file do not allow this'.

To use my Pi now I have to click cancel 11 times to get to the desktop and then once more to actually use it.

Most apps will now not run.

This persists despite removing !UnixHome

For future reference, for those new to RISCOS an indication when !UnixHome is required, a link to the correct version to use and instructions of what to do with it would be useful.

Very nice ports. Though you may wish to think about supporting more CPUs than just the ARMv6. I can understand optimizing for the ARMv6, this does not mean that you have to omit the older CPUs.

The SA110 used in many RiscPC systems runs at 200MHz and approximately 166MIPS.
The Intel XScale 80321 used in the Iyonix PC runs at 600MHz and approximately 450MIPs.

So it would be worth at least supporting the XScale and SA110 CPUs as they are quite fast, even if you optimize the ports for the ARMv6/7 CPUs of the RPi and BB.
RPi = The best ARM based RISC OS computer around
More than 95% of posts made from RISC OS on RPi 1B/1B+ computers. Most of the rest from RISC OS on RPi 2B/3B/3B+ computers

Thanks for the ports!

I have a question about Hatari, should I have sound? I am not sure if the problem might be because of my lapdock setup with RISC OS... I'm testing the latest version of maxYMiser with a 2.06 US TOS. Anyone ran maxYMiser already?

For anyone who is having problems with !unixhome: install with !packman.

My top 3 software is !Fastdosbox, !Cretin, and !DigitalCD.

I like !fastdosbox because it can run some (not all) of my favorite Dos games. Example: God of Thunder works well with little to zero lag.

!Cretin is a fantastic IRC client. I like it because it is customizable.
http://jymbob.drobe.co.uk/cretin.html - to install you place the application anywhere and put !zapfonts in $.!boot.resources. Set the CPU mode to ARM v5.

My third favorite application is !DigitalCD. It can play a variety of formats including flac and tracker formats. You can also skin and use visualizers. I originally thought !AMPlay was the best untill I found out about !DigitalCD.
