FTDI Serial USB?

Sat Feb 25, 2017 5:22 pm

How does one access an FTDI USB to serial adaptor, as a serial port in the RPi port of RISC OS?

I know there is supposed to be FTDI serial support in the USB stack, though I do not know how to access it from a program.

I am redoing my 3D printer firmware, which uses a RPi running RISC OS as the controller, and is written 100% in BBC BASIC V. This update is to take advantage of the fact that the newer Raspberry Pi systems have more GPIO pins available (thanks to the larger 40 pin header), so less support HW is needed. I intend to make a public release once I have the update done, and tested.

The trouble is that I need a way to read the thermistor to gauge the tempurature of the print head, for this I am using a Sigma Delta ADC by way of a Parallax P8X32A (Propeller) MCU, and sending the data over serial, though I would prefer to be able to keep the serial port on the RPi header open for other uses if possible. It is to bad that there is no good way to implement a sigma Delta ADC on the RPi header directly, and the RPi does not have an analog input for the job :( .

Thank you in advance.

I thank anyone for any help on this issue.

Also if you know of an alternative that could just use the RPi for the analog input, through a thermister (without using another IC), I would greatly appreciate that information

Well it is that I guess I am stuck taking up the serial on the header, I was hoping for better.

Well I did hope for better, such as life.

Now back to testing to figure out timing, not as easy as it sounds.

Thank you for that, I had not found that one yet.

I thought there was somewhere a more recent anouncement about FTDI device support on RISC OS, still can not locate that though.

I may end up stuck just using the serial port on GPIO, which I would rather not.

Does not need to be recent, if it works :)

Wow thank you. I had not thought to just look outside the ROOL tree, as I was thinking there was something in the ROOL tree.

thank you much for that link.

This SerialUSB has been working great for me (so far) with the RC15 image:
