No desktop

Sun Jul 21, 2019 1:22 pm

I have just done a first boot and get as far as the screen below but with a message
'No keyboard present, autobooting supervisor'
Previously with Raspian it is happy with the standard Microsoft mouse attached.
Is there some configuration I might need to do?

Did you wait. If you are not connected to the internet it will take a minute to get past the net-startup.

The no keyboard thing can be ignored. That is from the kernel before the USB drivers are loaded. You do probably have a keyboard.

Thanks, tried waiting and booting with a wired internet connection.
I can type into the command line, is it likely to be a display issue or similar that is stopping the desktop stage?

Strange. Even after you type the command:

Code: Select all

*Desktop
?

The star is the prompt, you do not need to type that it will already be there.

When you type it is a t a star prompt correct?

Even though that should not be needed. And the screen shot you showed tells me that it is running the boot sequence from the SD Card, so it is a strange issue.

Did you try flashing the RISC OS SD card image onto a different SD Card to see if the issue is your SD Card? Also may have been a bad write the first time, especially if you left off sync.

Thanks, it is now giving:

Message from Desktop:
Machine startup has not completed successfully: 'The disk drive is empty'.

Will give it a try with an alternative SD card

That message says that it loaded the ROM, though the ROM can not access the SD-Card.

Just for reference, what model of Raspberry Pi are you running on?

Hopefully you will have better luck. RISC OS is a usable OS, and my OS of choice.

Thanks, it is a 3 Model B+
Used Debian Disk Utility to format 32GB as FAT, marked it as bootable then used
dd bs=1M if=ro524-1875M.img of=/dev/sdb
It completed ok saying 2GB had been written
The USB was previously fine with Raspbian

After the dd command did you remember to do sync (i usaully would do it 3 times for good luck)?

Also I assume you mean SD not USB?

Thanks, tried with a couple of sync's after the DD but the same.
Yes, it is a Philips 32GB USB key not a SD card
Now tried with a PNY 32GB Micro SD HC in a USB card reader but again the same.

By default RISC OS is setup to boot from SD Card NOT USB. There is a bit of config to do to change that, and it will not work unless you have the boot files in the correct place on the SD Card.

So you need a micro SD card in the Micro SD slot on the RPi 3B+ to boot RISC OS. Once you get that done I can post instructions to run from a USB stick and have more space (you will still have to have a Micro SD card in the RPi, sorry).

To save you time, you don't need to prepare or format the card in any way. The ".img" file you copy onto the card with dd contains everything, including the partition table. There is also no point in making it bootable.

Any formatting you do beforehand is overwritten and lost (and unneeded wear on the card!).

I just use "cp" by the way, it is slightly less to type!

cp ro524-1875M.img /dev/sdb
sync

All sorted!
Any advice on a Javascript browser?
Used PackMan to install Otter but it crashes on most sites. Firefox installed ok (using Store) but locks up the whole desktop every time its run.
Also could not see how to upgrade Netsurf with either of the package managers, PackMan doesn't list it and Store does not seem to offer upgrades.
Can it be done by downloading the file and copying it somewhere?

You need to upgrade NetSurf manually; download the latest version from https://www.netsurf-browser.org/ and overwrite the existing app.

As for an alternative browser, you're in the same boat as the rest of us. There is one in development but there aren't any public builds available yet.
