raspberry pi becomes 'inactive' after period of time

Wed Jun 20, 2012 9:31 am

without any input to ssh or using transmission web interface for long periods of time, the pi becomes inactive: 'usb drive led is off', ssh is refused and transmission web is inaccessible. only restarting the pi will restore everything back to normal

running archlinux with openssh and transmission daemon

Hi,
I was searching the forum because I have the same problem...
(but I'm miles away from my pi, LoL, so it is staying freezed... )
One of my projects with the Raspberry Pi:

Maybe take a look at /var/logs/messages and see what happened before it stopped responding?

Same issue here, I thought it was just a fluke.

Nothing is written to disk, like it's deadlocked.

Code: Select all

'long periods of time'
How long is that? I've had arch and gentoo running on my pi compiling for upto 5 days straight without restarting it or having it crash.

I have a similar problem with Debian Squeeze (19-4 img, all packages up to date)

It has been left running happily for 3 days straight before but after cloning with git it froze, I returned home to find a kernel panic and now it happens at random intervals (using wget, git, general config editing).

I have been able to compile a kernel on there (not currently using it) and that ran fine over ssh.

It seems to be any network intensive tasks that causes the freezing.

I'm powering it with an iphone charger & only accessory is a flash drive.

Any body have any ideas?

I've done some searching through the logs and found:

smsc95xx 1-1.1:1.0: eth0: kevent 2 may have been dropped

some searching turned up people with similar problems relating to both Debian and arch:
http://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=3043
http://forum.stmlabs.com/showthread.php?pid=3755

they recommend:

Code: Select all

sudo bash -c "echo vm.min_free_kbytes = 8192 >> /etc/sysctl.conf"
sudo sysctl -p
but some say this only puts off the crash for extra time.

hope this helps some one!

I am also experiencing this problem.

Last night I got my Pi up and running with LAMP, static IP and port forwarding so that I could access the webserver (and SSH) from outside. It was left overnight but when I tried to SSH in from work this morning there was no response, also not hitting the webserver from my browser.

I'm dreading getting back and just finding a smouldering pile of ashes in the corner next to my router! :D
