Sat Jul 14, 2012 11:03 pm

Hello everyone,

I just got my raspberry pi and installed arch linux but I am unable to connect to the internet. Is there an beginners guide on how to do this?

I have used linux before but not very much and got the rasp in order to learn.

Thanks.

I live in a university campus so I do not have access to any router.
I simply connect it to the socket.

The connect seems to be up. When I input 'ip address' on the pi eth0 shows as up but it fails to ping and is failing to obtain pacman packages...

It also does not have wireless_tools

Did you do
"ip link set eth0 up"
Then,
"dhcpcd eth0"?

I couldn't get mine to recognize any of my various WiFi adapters. However, my PC running Windows XP works fine on the Internet (WiFi link to router in other part of house). I set up an Ethernet "Bridge," and connected the RPi that way. Works fine.

May I ask how did you do that?

I have a 3G Internet via USB in my WindowsXP laptop. I tried to share that via ethernet LAN using these instructions:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126

In Pi (wheezy) I changed the ethernet to use a static IP (instead of DHCP):

Code: Select all

[email protected] ~ $ cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo

iface lo inet loopback

# Get IP dynamically via DHCP
#iface eth0 inet dhcp

# Fixed IP
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.0.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1
After a reboot I am able to connect from WinXP to Pi using SSH:

Code: Select all

> putty.exe 192.168.0.2
Pinging 192.168.0.2 works also, no problem.

However, I am unable to ping WinXP (192.168.0.1) from Pi:

Code: Select all

[email protected] ~ $ ping 192.168.0.1
PING 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
(nothing happens)
No error message, nothing.

At first I suspected firewalls, but I shut down my Comodo and turned off the Windows Firewall to no avail.

Any ideas?

First of all, are you able to ping yourself from you Windows machine (i.e. 192.168.0.1)? I have little experience of internet sharing in Windows since I always use a router, but I've read that such problems exist.

Yes. "ping 192.169.0.1" works as expected in WinXP. I checked if I had turned off some essential service but I was unable to find anything relevant.

I guess one way would be to boot my WinXP laptop into some Linux live distro via USB and try to configure that... Unfortunately last time I booted into Linux it did not find my cheap-ass 3G modem (BandLuxe C179).

PROBLEM SOLVED. Selecting "Exit" from COMODO's menu does not disable it. It just looks like it does.

I uninstalled COMODO and now I can ping both 192.168.0.1 and 8.8.8.8 from my Raspberry Pi.

Unfortunately I messed both my WinXP's and Pi's network settings when debugging. I am going to clean things up and test things again. After that I could write a simple HOWTO to WinXP-ethernet-Pi Internet connection setup.

(Feeling victorious!)
