Status of Fedora Remix?

Sun Apr 28, 2013 12:30 am

Hello All!

I was wondering what the status of the Fedora Remix (17 and/or 18) was? I can get it from the http://scotland.proximity.on.ca/raspber ... ora-remix/ and I hear it's great work! However, I can't get it from the "Downloads" page on http://www.rasperrypi.org/downloads/? How come? Does this mean it's not "stable" yet or is it in the process of being added? I think I recall that originally the Fedora Remix was going to be the "Official Recommended Distro" for the Rpi, why is it not even listed still?

Thanks!

The Fedora release lost it's 'recommended' status due to issues with the initial Fedora 14 releases (which was what was originally made available for the Pi) and has never regained it. There are now lots of Linux distributions available for the Pi that are not listed on the raspberrypi.org downloads page, and Fedora is one of them. It has at least been deemed worthy of a dedicated sub-section in the forum.

You sir, have just made my day! I can't wait to have more users on Fedora for RPi!

:)

PS: I'm an avid RHEL/CentOS/Fedora fan in case you can't tell. IMHO The RHEL line of distros are the only "real" distros.

I have been using the test release pidora for 2 days which is fedora 18v6 hf.

It has not been released i think :) but seems to be loading as good as the fedora 18v5 image.
Does get an issue in kernel upgrade but then it doesn't seem to be released yet anyways.

http://scotland.proximity.on.ca/raspber ... /rpfr18v6/

don't have time to run tests but would love to compare with fedora 18 once it is ready.(Just to see how much of an impact adding hf makes to a user)

HF will make a HUGE difference when running application code. The OS will be much more responsive, etc. Overall much better.

HF coupled with the increased RAM plus some good 'ol open-jdk = goodness!

I'm actually quite curious. What will come? An improved rpfr18? An alpha rpfr19? Improved installer? Or a new image called Pidora (http://zenit.senecac.on.ca/wiki/index.p ... EP_Meeting)?
I have not found anything about it yet. Not on 'http://www.raspberrypi.org' , ' http://zenit.senecac.on.ca/wiki/index.p ... dora_Remix' or on ' http://blog.chris.tylers.info'
Where will this announcement be made?

tedsluis,

You are correct Pidora is the Raspberry Pi Fedora Remix, (armv6hl version) to be included on a new multi-distro card image that will be bundled with the hardware,

Features you can look forward to and other cool things, you will have to wait for the announcement

From the conversation log (http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora ... 8.log.html) it is also clear that:
- A RC1 version of Pidora 18 will be released shortly, probably may 28.
- It will use the latest arm boot config.
- The new firmware enables Pidora to be included on a new multi-distro card image that will be bundled with the hardware.
- Gui performance is improved.
- Full toolchain.
- The firstboot is improved.

Sounds all very good!

The CDOT team at Seneca College launched a new web site with a new Pidora 18RC1 image and Installation documentation.

Check this: http://www.pidora.ca/
From: Jon Chiappetta <[email protected]>
Date: 2013/5/22
Subject: [fedora-arm] Pidora 18 (Raspberry Pi Fedora Remix) Release
To: "arm ‎[[email protected]]‎" <[email protected]>, "[email protected]" <[email protected]>

We're excited to announce the release of Pidora 18 -- an optimized Fedora Remix for the Raspberry Pi.
It is based on a brand new build of Fedora for the ARMv6 architecture with greater speed and includes packages from the Fedora 18 package set.

* * *

There are some interesting new features we'd like to highlight:
* Almost all of the Fedora 18 package set available via yum (thousands of packages were built from the official Fedora repository and made available online)
* Compiled specifically to take advantage of the hardware already built into the Raspberry Pi
* Graphical firstboot configuration (with additional modules specifically made for the Raspberry Pi)
* Compact initial image size (for fast downloads) and auto-resize (for maximum storage afterwards)
* Auto swap creation available to allow for larger memory usage
* C, Python, & Perl programming languages available & included in the SD card image
* Initial release of headless mode can be used with setups lacking a monitor or display
* IP address information can be read over the speakers and flashed with the LED light
* For graphical operation, Gedit text editor can be used with plugins (python console, file manager, syntax highlighting) to serve as a mini-graphical IDE
* For console operation, easy-to-use text editors are included (nled, nano, vi) plus Midnight Commander for file management
* Includes libraries capable of supporting external hardware
such as motors and robotics (via GPIO, I2C, SPI)

* * *

For further documentation, downloads, faq's, read-me's,
how-to's, tutorials, or videos:
http://pidora.ca/
