CRON addition

Tue Oct 10, 2017 1:10 pm

I have been adding a cron task as a time saver, and it might be an advantage to have it added to the standard distribution. I add a "cron nightly" with sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get -y upgrade. This keeps things fresh and I don't have to worry about older versions that stop working.

Doing that is risky. You could get a bad package that crashes your system.

If you really insist there's already an APT auto-updater package in DebIan / Raspbian.

I'm on a phone now so it's not easy for me to find that.

That would be the unattended-upgrades package then. Something I always disable/uninstall on all of my systems.

Note that this is something forum participants tend to be a bit schizophrenic about. On the one hand, they all say (as noted in the previous thread responses) that they would never do this on any of their machines, but yet they recommend to all newbies that they run the "update/upgrade" dance as often as possible - and, essentially, blindly.

It is then quite natural for a newcomer to assume that automating it is an obvious good move...
