Wi-Fi with Soft Float distribution

Tue Oct 02, 2012 10:10 pm

Did anyone get a USB Wi-Fi dongle to work with the soft float distribution of Wheezy?

With a downloaded 8192cu.ko driver (e.g. for Edimax EW-7811Un), I only get "wrong format" and similar errors when loading that module.

Another stick, RT2573-based, gets recognized automatically, recognizes my network with "iwlist scan" but I cannot seem to get it to work with wpa_supplicant. The error says

Code: Select all

rfkill: Cannot open RFKILL control device
ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument
ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument
My config is

/etc/network/interfaces

Code: Select all

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp

iface wlan0 inet dhcp
    pre-up wpa_supplicant -Dwext -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -B
/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

Code: Select all

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
#ap_scan=1
network={
    ssid="myssid"
    scan_ssid=1
    proto=RSN
    pairwise=CCMP TKIP
    group=CCMP TKIP
    # Values as shown by "iwlist scan":
    #pairwise=CCMP
    #group=TKIP

    # It's a WPA2-encrypted network
    key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
    psk=<long hex string as returned by "wpa_passphrase myssid">

I use Debian.

My /etc/network/interfaces contains
auto lo
auto wlan0

iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet dhcp

iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid ssid
wpa-psk passphrase
I don't have an /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

/etc/wpa_supplicant just contains the default files action_wpa.sh functions.sh ifupdown.sh

My wifi works fine however I too get "ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument" using wpa_supplicant.
I've noticed you have proto set to RSN in my configuration file it's set to WPA not sure if that's right or wrong though:

my wpa_supplicant.conf (entries have been changed to protect the innocent)
network={
ssid="Pony"
proto=WPA
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
psk="ridemynetwork"
#psk=14156a8d83e71ffe7ef5b7796d761f4723bdbe9ab7d39d290fd0e181f31544742
}

psk in ascii form need to be enclosed in double quotes otherwise it will be expecting hex code.

my /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo

iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp
iface wlan0 inet dhcp

command to turn off ethernet: ifconfig eth0 down
command to bring up wlan0: wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

If you have connectivity but no IP address then enter (once only): dhclient wlan0

I managed to use MrEngman's script after all. It is important to select an armel-compatible package from https://dl.dropbox.com/u/80256631/insta ... 188cus.txt (in my case http://dl.dropbox.com/u/80256631/8192cu-20120726.tar.gz as listed under "2012-08-08-wheezy-armel" in the text file).

Return to “Debian”
