no network after raspberry-sys-mods20170306

Tue Mar 21, 2017 3:43 pm

On i386 Lenovo with Realtec rtl81888cu I installed the 2016-12-13-pixel-x86-jessie and it ran fine until I performed upgrade which contained raspberrypi-sys-mods-20170306.
After a reboot no network was available.Restored backup, rebooted and network was present.
After putting the raspberrypi-sys-mods-2017-03-06 back on and re-booting, no network is available.
I used synaptic to put a few upgrades on at a time, reboot and if I worked did a backup then did the next few upgrades until I got the failure.
Following are various screen prints from system when the failure happens:

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ ifconfig -a

Does removing /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-rtl*.conf fix the problem?

NEGATIVE, removed the two "rtl8****" entries, re-booted and still no network connection, access to the forum is via my windows system. As information, it also fails on 20170315.

I don't see any other relevant changes:

What will cause the "ifup wlan0"
as part of the error msg to have
"run-parts: /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/wpasupplicant exited with return code 1"
in other words, what is pre-up looking at/for?
If I look at the wireless network when it works, there are 6-8 with strong signals (don't know if that helps).
I'm new to this unix/raspbdian world, looked for something new in retirement years to learn.

It would be running /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/wpasupplicant

Are you able to launch wpa_supplicant manually?

You got it--when I ran wpa_supplicant using driver rtl8192cu I get "wlan0: unsupported driver rtl8192cu".

Why it only fails once you do the upgrade to raspberry-sys-mods is strange. Would have though that some of the DEBIAN modules updates would have caused it to failed first. Guess I'll just have to keep the sys-mods on hold.
Thanks a bunch for the help....

What command are you launching it with?

command I am issuing is:

sudo wpa_supplicant -Drtl8192cu -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

According to Debian document the RTL8188cu uses the rtl8192 kernal, looks like the documentation for version 8 needs to be updated also

Code: Select all

-D driver
Driver to use (can be multiple drivers: nl80211,wext). (Per interface, see the available options below.)
That's not the type of driver the -D option refers to. Try -Dwext

Using the "Dwext" here is the screen output:

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ sudo wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

Could you post the output of 'dmesg' and 'ifconfig -a'?

Not sure what you want from "dmsg", not familiar with it. Is that the run.log output in .cache?
Anyway, here the the ifconfig -a output

Just the full output of the command "dmesg" (not "dmsg"). Please use code tags so that it doesn't take up the full screen:

Code: Select all

example

Not sure how to do it--when I click on your "code: select all" cursor moves to "example" and nothing else happens. I think you are trying to show me how to shorten the output but not getting though the brick wall, sri...

When you post the output of dmesg, select it all and then click the 'Code' button. It should have 'Code' tags around it when you click submit.

If you don't figure it out, don't worry, just post the output as is.

I can't help but think that the blacklist files have something to do with it, but I can't figure out how they could be having an affect if you've removed them.

I had previously just deleted the single line out of each file, but I have now removed(deleted) entirely the 2 files and after re-boot it still does not have network connectivity.

In the "blacklist" I had made a backup copy of the 2 files with an "X" as the starting of the names before editing to remove data line and secondly before deleting the files, problem is, renamed files had extension of "conf", so they were being picked up and being used to blacklist the rtl8_____devices.
Mistake caused by "newbie" to linux operation.
Wasn't aware that startup reads the entire "/etc/modprobe.d" folder looking/executing anything with an extension of ".conf".

Network does connect if there is NO BLACKLIST for the RTL8192cu in the modprobe.d file!.
Am I operating safely removing the blacklist items should they return in future updates? OR, should I trash this old Lenovo, keep the monitor and get a new pi-3? Thanks for all the time/help as I learned a few new things.
Believe post can be closed....thanks again shift-plus-one.

Future updates should not bring those files back, so you should be okay.
