D-Link DWA-121 usb wifi not working?

Fri Jul 06, 2012 9:17 am

Just installed Debian “squeeze” debian6-19-04-2012 with LXDE and I am having problems getting D-Link DWA-121 usb dongle to work. Not having wired internet access doesnt make it any easier.

A GUI for wireless network would be nice if such a thing exist on Debian.

I have no clue what to do. Any ideas?

I needed to bridge the USB polyfuses to get my WiFi adapter working. Not recommended unless you're fairly experienced at soldering, and confident that the total USB power draw is compatible with the RPi and the power supply. The easier (but klunkier) solution is to use a powered USB hub.

You may or may not need to install a driver. Use iwconfig to see if the WiFi adapter is recognised. Using Debian Wheezy I was lucky. Otherwise look here for info on WiFi drivers: http://wiki.debian.org/WiFi

For configuration I used the command-line tool wpa_supplicant following the instructions here:
http://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse#Command_Line

Wicd is easy to use and gives you a GUI.

I'd try Debian wheezy first as it seems to work much better out of the box.

Thanks helping out. I tried adding a usb hub with power and followed the steps in the Debian wiki. Not much luck.

No networks found with wicd :/

Hi,
I expirence the same problem, my Dlink DWA-121 (N150) is not registrated by the RPI. I have tried
the instructions for r8192u_usb on http://wiki.debian.org/rtl819x#supported-r8192u-usb but the make files does not work on the RPI. - My guess is that the driver must be compiled in the kernel to work with the RPI.

How can this problem be adressed to the right persons in RPI development..???

I'm using latest firmware (rpi-update) on 2012-06-18-wheezy-beta + apt-get upgrade on it

Hi Peter,
I've not a dev env set up yet, but have the same usb wifi adapter as you.
The device is operational on adafruit-raspberry-pi-educational-linux-distro/occidentalis-v0-dot-1 which is based on 2012-07-15-wheezy-raspbian

I'm sure you can just copy the binary to your node from this distrib without having to compile.. (unable to attach size is 214k zipped)

The Edimax EW-7811Un wifi adapter is supposed to work on the latest Wheezy but, although it is correctly listed in lsusb, the gui wifi config doesn't recognise it on my machine. However, on the same machine with Occidentalis v0.2, it runs perfectly without any changes to files etc. What's wrong with Wheezy?
Thanks in advance,

Hi Petercal,
would you be so kind to explain how you installed the new driver? and what is the script, the link to your dropbox seems to be broken.
I have the same dongle and i am getting desperate, can't make it work.

Thanks in advance.
