The Proto Blog: Prototyping Industrial Solutions Using RPi

Mon Feb 17, 2014 6:32 pm

The Proto Blog
Prototyping Industrial Solutions using the Raspberry Pi and Linux

The Proto Blog is an online resource focused on prototyping industrial solutions using the Raspberry Pi and Linux. A few of topics on our list of upcoming articles include:
  • Why Prototype Industrial Solutions with the RPi?
  • Interfacing the RPi with External Sensors and Actuators
  • Communicating with Factory Systems using Industrial Protocols
  • Mounting and Protecting the Raspberry Pi
  • Adding Real-time Capabilities to the RPi
  • Extending Lua for Measurement and Control
We also have some exciting products in development that extend the Raspberry Pi value proposition to include industrial applications. In fact, our Proto Armour® product line features the Proto Armour for Raspberry Pi and Proto Armour for Raspberry Pi and Camera enclosure kits, which are already on the market and available for purchase!

Of particular interest is a new product we call the Proto PLC. This project includes an add-on board that brings real-time measurement and control capabilities to the RPi. The board also fits inside our Proto Armour cases, which is great for existing customers. An upcoming post will shed more light on the Proto PLC, and we can't wait to talk about it!

I want to reach out to those readers who resonate with our plans and feel they have something interesting and useful to contribute to our blog. Creating a steady supply of original content about Prototyping Industrial Solutions using the Raspberry Pi and Linux is work, and is something we're willing to pay for. If you are interested in our cause, knowledgeable in this field, and are a decent writer, please contact us at [email protected] to discuss this unique opportunity.

The latest post on the Proto Blog is about overclocking and overvolting the RPi for extra performance:

Overclocking and Overvolting the Raspberry Pi

In this post I will be discussing overclocking and overvolting the Raspberry Pi for increased performance. I’ll cover what each of these practices are and how to use them, and will describe advantages and disadvantages to better understand what is safe or not for your RPi. Additionally, I’ve run some temperature tests on my very own RPi and will review it’s core temperature after long periods of heavy load on the CPU and GPU. Overheating is the biggest concern when dealing with overclocking and overvolting, so heat management was the main focus of my tests.

The latest post on the Proto Blog is about the Raspberry Pi Camera Module Hardware:

Raspberry Pi Camera Module - Part 1: Hardware

This article focuses solely on the module hardware and what kind of video or images the camera sensor can produce. We’ll look at the standard module as well as the new NoIR Module just released by the Raspberry Pi Foundation. There is a way to use external lenses with these modules, and we attempt to explain how to do this safely for those looking to push the envelope. Lastly we review some case and mounting options for the RPi and Camera Module to help you decide which case is right for your next project.

The latest post on the Proto Blog is about the Raspberry Pi Camera Module Software:

Raspberry Pi Camera Module - Part 2: Software

In our last article we discussed the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s Camera Module, but focused mainly on its hardware. In this article we discuss the software that utilizes the hardware. The main ways to use the module is with raspistill and raspivid, which are Linux commands. They are used to record a still image or video in the Raspbian operating system. These Linux commands can also be called from a C program, and we’ll cover more on this later. You can also utilize the camera module using a Python library called picamera. Pyhton is a very easy to learn high-level language. It is much less like C and is more comparable to Java.

The latest post on the Proto Blog talks about several popular operating systems that run on the Raspberry Pi:

Raspberry Pi Operating Systems

In this article I will discuss popular operating systems for the Raspberry Pi. All of these systems are open source and free to use. A few of them are designed for more specific purposes, and may not be necessarily well suited for industrial applications. The majority of operating systems on this list are more generic desktop systems that can be adapted to run as an industrial control system. I will explain how you can utilize these OS’s in such a manner in each of their respective sections.
