Kids Education and hobbies

Sun Sep 15, 2013 10:22 am

Hi
I am recently new to PI and installed mines the other night. Just running through the initial HDMI config, adjustments to sound, keyboard, mouse, Java, flash etc.

In recent talks with other PI users it seems the "XBMC" has taken the limelight and seems to be the new craze. But, how can this be educational for children or learning?

I am wondering what is the best direction to take for this?
Can the Pi be used for music education for example ? can it be connected to MIDI ports etc on keyboards etc?
Can it be used for foreign speaking language learning? Maths skills?
What is the best direction to take for programming skills?
Can it be used for robotics? Science projects etc?

Best Regards

The default image by the foundation should include "Scratch" and Python.
You can install Minecraft and program it using Python as well.
Kids would learn at the same time have fun with it.

The basic distribution includes Python and PyGame - a nice framework for building realtime games, playing sounds and dealing with MIDI notes.

To program MIDI events in Python you do use the module "pygame.midi" I found this example that I thought was a good starting place to get going with Pygame and Midi.

Thanks
I will check the status of Python and Pygame on my raspberry
For example if I wanted to connect my CASIO CTK 700 keyboard to my raspberry using MIDI connection would I need to use MIDI to USB or what methods would I use?
How would I instruct my keyboard to play sounds from my rasperry etc
Does that example you gave me give me the power to do this?
