If you could share 1 idea with a teacher, what would it be?

Tue Feb 05, 2013 12:13 pm

I've got a Raspberry Pi presentation to facilitate on Saturday for the CAS Hub leaders. i.e. The people who are going to be teaching Computer Science to the teachers... What would you share in a 1 hour workshop? All ideas and resources greatly appreciated. I will have with me:
1. A pi
2. SD Cards with Wheazy & RISC OS
3. Linux Laptop

James A.

P.S. No pressure, but the future of computer science is in your hands... Literally!

I suggest you utilise the gpio. Otherwise the Pi is pretty much just an inexpensive computer.

Hands-on. Have some simple open-ended project that you can build and enhance together.

The Raspberry Pi is Computer-Science-land, to extend Papert's maths-land analogy.

Have words with a teacher who has used the GPIO and teaches Computing already and has given presentations to other teachers about the Pi?

Thanks for those ideas. I'll try to get a list of projects together to share...

Ensure they understand that Linux is far different and better than Windows and is not pointy-clickey...

Well if your presentation is to the people who will then teach CS to the teachers, who will in turn teach it to the students, I assume they already know how to program.

I'm guessing they might not know much about Linux though. So they just need to see they'll have the tools to get started out of the box.

So maybe just start with a completely standard SD card and go through the tools, what's available without extra downloads and how to set it up for first use. Then compile some C in GCC and show Python working. (And BASIC if you think it's a quick way to get the old BBC owners started.)

Everything else they need can be looked up, once they know it exists.

also in my mind i see lots of dots joining up

RPI + RepRap + 3Dchocolate

compuer science , DnT , home ec

they may be something in this ,
it may well just be the ramblings of a fool ...

I agree with this, as a teacher i need ideas (which will work in a whole class situation) to help me enable kids to use the physical interactivity of the raspberry pi.

whole class situation = 30 ish kids of vastly differing abilities

@duberry
I work in both the DT dept and the IT dept. The DT dept has just got a RepRap 3d printer (not quite working yet) but i am very keen to get my hands on it and see what it can do (and if it can do anything with the Pi)

I see this quite differently. I would emphasize that the Pi is a very small inexpensive computer and not just a faster MCU.
