How to share every PC monitor in class of 20 students

Sat May 25, 2019 3:29 pm

Hi

I teach Arduino in a clasroom with 20 PC's.

From September we like to offer raspberryPi courses too in the same class room.

I wonder now how to use the 20 PC's, keyboards, mouses, network for also 20 PI3's.

I want to use both GUI and non GUI control of the PI's. ( so not only putty )

Should I install tightvncserver on every PI3 and connect from every PC to a specific PI3?

Or are there better ways?

Thanks for your advise!

The Raspbian OS has RealVNC pre installed. Much better than tightvnc XRDP etc.
RealVNC shows the actual local desktop.

You only need to enable VNC on each RPi and install the RealVNC viewer on each PC: https://www.realvnc.com/en/connect/download/viewer/
Note you do not need to sign up for the optional Connect feature in order to use the RealVNC viewer on a local network.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated Raspbian Buster w/ Desktop OS.

It would be worth checking the licence T&Cs at https://static.realvnc.com/media/docume ... spi_en.pdf

The Pi page is a bit lacking in the education area:
With VNC® Connect, you can establish direct and cloud connections, free for non-commercial use.
For use as part of a product or service, get in touch.
The other problem with VNC is that there is nothing to stop the students linking to another Pi in view mode and copying work between them or messing around with the connection settings...

I would go for a simple video / keyboard / mouse switch between the two devices
Need Pi spray - these things are breeding in my house...
