Raspberry Pi stopped saving data

Tue Aug 08, 2017 3:24 pm

We have installed 20 Raspberry Pi systems in a room where they are used by kids aged 13-18 that cannot buy their own computer. The systems were working perfectly, but since around two weeks they cannot save data anymore.

What happens is when you save a file on the SD card it looks like it has been saved. However, when you reboot the Pi, the file simply is not there anymore. There is sufficient free space, the cards are 32GB and only around 8GB is used. Even if you don't reboot, after around 20 minutes the file will also disappear.

This happened to all devices at the same time. It is really strange.

1. Have you tested that the SDCards are genuine?
2. SDCards that have reached end-of-life switch into read-only mode (so you can retreive your photos but can't write new ones on them - remember they were invented for cameras)
3. Are your power supplies good enough, a lousy power supply can cause strange, weird and inexplicable problems.

For a school setting you may want to run PiNet where all the data/code/stuff created on the RPi is stored on the hard disk on a Linux system running the PiNet server.

Thank you

1. The SD cards are from sandisk.
2. We have replaced the SD card in two systems. Saving files was working again, but stopped working within a few hours. The card is not shown as read-only on a laptop. Besides, does it make sense that all cards would fail on the same day?
3. They cost around 15$ each.

Do you think the Raspberry Pis need to be replaced to solve this problem?

You need to start with some other make (any other make) of 8GB SDCard and a copy of plain Raspbian. Get that booted, get the suspect SDCards mounted in a USB reader and take a look at what's happened with them. Start with the logs in /media/pi/*/var/log (which is where the auto-mounter will put things).

Then pick a suspect card, copy plain Raspbian on to it (using the GUI SDCard Copier). Shutdown cleanly, swap cards and see what happens when you boot that.

Grab some big files from http://www.sample-videos.com/ write them to the 32GB SDCard, shutdown, reboot, see what happens.
