Compatible 2,5" SSD case for USB boot, any recommendations?

Mon Mar 19, 2018 7:26 am

Hello,

I want to boot my Raspberry Pi from a small SSD and tried three different enclosures/cases:

https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00DW3 ... UTF8&psc=1 (I have quite a few of these)
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00F6Q ... UTF8&psc=1
https://www.amazon.de/FB-C25US2-Festpla ... tec+fanbox

Only the last one worked (old USB2.0). At least for one week!? Now it doesn't work any more. I thought my Raspberry PI is damaged, but it still boots without any problems from micro SD. Linux fsck can't find any problem for the root fs and dosfsck can't find any problem with the boot partition.

I measured the current consumption of the USB drive and it is 230 mA max.

So, do you have any recommendation for a compatible USB 2,5" HDD enclosure? Preferably available in germany?

I did a short search for this topic in the forum ("USB HD case" or something like that) and didn't find anything. And I posted this also in the "General discussions" forum because there is much more traffic (crosspost).

The RPi3B 2.5amp power supply can run an external disk, but not all disks will work.

A powered USB hub is recommended for external disks in general, I believe.

Hello,

thank you for your answer.
Because I expected answers like this, I already wrote in my initial posting, that I measured the current consumption of the drive (that worked) and it is 230mA max. This should be no problem for the Raspberry Pi.
One of the other drives I tried (2nd link in the initial posting) has it's own power supply but didn't work either.
The power supply I use for my Raspberry Pi is specified to deliver 5V 10A.

I hope there is somebody out there, who knows an external USB hard drive case that works reliable.
