Installation instructions Edimax EW-7811Un WiFi USB

Sun Oct 21, 2012 4:35 am

I posted a new blog article providing a step-by-step set of instructions for installing the popular Edimax EW-7811Un Wireless 802.11bgn USB Adapter. This set of instructions excludes the complicated driver installation steps since this driver is now provided in the latest Raspbian distributions.

On my wheezy most of this was done automatically once connected through the gui client.
It has a different file location and name though:

/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

Below if I set iface wlan0 inet dhcp it errors saying it must be manual

Code: Select all

auto wlan0
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-conf /etc/wpa.conf
My setup is:

Code: Select all

auto lo
auto wlan0

iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet manual
wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
iface default inet dhcp
It connects on boot. It did not have auto wlan0 I believe this is common as I have seen a few articles that show it isn't there with default setup and I couldn't get auto connected without it there.

Just fyi for comparison

Hi malakai,

I have updated the article to more closely match the configuration to what the GUI tool creates. I was not using the GUI tool and had just manually created these settings a while back.

Thanks, Robert

savageautomate,
I have followed your tutorial all the way through, however when i do the
sudo ifup wlan0
it says
wlan0 already configured
but when i do the ifconfig i still do not get an ip address? I have no password for my wifi, so i left psk blank-could this be a problem?
any ideas?

Hey all. It's pretty straightforward on Raspbian. The steps on my blog post should work.

EDITED: Had to fix the URL. My baaaad.
