UPDATE: Pimoroni Phat DAC - Software Volume WORKING!

Fri Jun 17, 2016 6:08 pm

UPDATE:

well, i kinda have some egg on my face - after acquiring, installing, then failing to effect software volume control for the Pimoroni PHAT DAC a number of months ago, i have finally fixed the problem and can now control the wonderful sound output of this audio hat...

here's what works for me on my older Raspian distro (i'm sure this will work on the lastest, and will try at some point):

obviously, /boot/config.txt needs to enable the overlay:

Code: Select all

dtoverlay=i2s-mmap
dtoverlay=hifiberry-dac
#dtparam=audio=on
dtparam=spi=on
next, i use this /etc/asound.conf:

Code: Select all

pcm.hifiberry {
    type softvol
    slave.pcm "plughw:0"
    control.name "Master"
    control.card 0
}

pcm.!default {
	type plug
	slave.pcm "softvol"
}

pcm.softvol {
	slave {
		pcm "sysdefault"
	}
	control {
		name "softvol"
		card 0
	}
}
and finally, this in .asoundrc in my home directory:

Code: Select all

pcm.!default {
	type plug
	slave.pcm "softvol"
}

pcm.softvol {
	slave {
		pcm "sysdefault"
	}
	control {
		name "softvol"
		card 0
	}
}
reboot and you should see the volume working for the system... you may need to set vlc's audio device for network audio streams and audacious' audio prefs to play music

i wish Pimoroni's default install script had worked off the bat when i first got the PHAT DAC - now i'm off to see if i can find another - it works great!

thanks!

but it looks like i won't try it either - 567MB download? PayPal involved? nope, not for me...

will have to investigate a bit more... quite disappointed in the Phat DAC as yet, but i'm not giving up!

EDIT/UPDATE: solved the problem - see original post above!

it seems that this tutorial doesn't work
on my RPi0 after setting as written I don't have any controls available in alsamixer
