Using old Creative webcam with motion

Sat Sep 28, 2013 7:59 am

I've dug out my old Creative live mini webcam in that I'm hoping I can get it working with my pi.

I've installed motion, plugged in the webcam which gets detected:

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 05a9:0518 OmniVision Technologies, Inc. OV518 Webcam
In the messages log I see this when I startup motion:

Code: Select all

Sep 28 08:57:20 weather motion: [1] cap.driver: "ov519"
Sep 28 08:57:20 weather motion: [1] cap.card: "USB Camera"
Sep 28 08:57:20 weather motion: [1] cap.bus_info: "usb-bcm2708_usb-1.2"
Sep 28 08:57:20 weather motion: [1] cap.capabilities=0x85000001
Sep 28 08:57:20 weather motion: [1] - VIDEO_CAPTURE
Sep 28 08:57:20 weather motion: [1] - READWRITE
Sep 28 08:57:20 weather motion: [1] - STREAMING
Sep 28 08:57:20 weather motion: [1] Config palette index 3 (JPEG) doesn't work.
Sep 28 08:57:20 weather motion: [1] Supported palettes:
Sep 28 08:57:20 weather motion: [1] 0: O518 (O518)
I've tried playing around with various options in the conf file with the palette but non of them work.
How do I get a a supported palette of O518 or is my camera too old :(

There are few posts regarding OV518/519 based webcams but no resolutions, though in an older Linux related posting it does state

"NOTE: The ov519 driver only works with applications that support JPEG video format"

I would be happy if I could get it to just do screen captures.

Tried fswebcam but having no luck there either.

Code: Select all

This was the old Linux Posting I found:

http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511/cameras.html
http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511/faq.html

They mention gqcam which is not in Debian Wheezy but was in Debian Sid, it may still be in the repostories !

Thanks for the info - tried that and couldnt get it going. Guess its time to retire the old cam.
I tried PC's newer webcam and it works flawlessly so I guess its time to get a compatible cam off eBay.

I had the same problem with my old Creative Web Cam Model PD1030 running the latest kernel. I found an old Arch Arm distribution from last year 3.2.27-5 and it now works with fswebcam :)

Code: Select all

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so fswebcam -r 320x240 -d /dev/video0 -p RGB24 -i 0 --no-banner image.jpg
Also, on my main Ubuntu x86_64 box (3.5.0-42) with the same gspca_main (2.14.0) & gspca_ov519 modules loaded I can get it to work as well with fswebcam, gstreamer, cheese, vlc etc :-

Code: Select all

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l2convert.so fswebcam -r 320x240 -d /dev/video0 -p RGB24 -i 0 --no-banner fsweb.jpg
gstreamer doesn't require the PRELOAD fix

Code: Select all

gst-launch-0.10 v4l2src device=/dev/video0 num-buffers=100 ! 'video/x-raw-yuv,width=640,height=480' ! ffmpegcolorspace ! ffenc_mpeg4 ! queue ! avimux ! filesink location=movie.mpg
So it looks like somethings broken in the latest kernel :?:
