RaspiRobot board

Thu Apr 18, 2013 11:24 am

I recently ordered a RaspiRobot board just to learn a little bit more about the pi and how all this stuff works. I am not so sure I understand what all would hook into an open collector? Can someone elaborate on what I would use Open Collectors for in robotics? Thanks.

Open collector is probably just the type of transistor output it uses to power things. If you are going to use it to drive an LED or similar device you connect your device (maybe with a resistor to limit the current) between the output and the POSITIVE power.

Have a look at the following:

http://electronicsclub.info/transistors.htm

You'll see in many of the circuits on that page, the thing being switched is connected between the transistor's Collector and the battery.
